Sat outside and stared at the Christmas lights for 20 minutes because I just needed to decompress. Mozzies and whatnot galore but the lights reflecting off the roof sheeting just makes my heart soar.

Feeling so much better. My swollen sinuses have reduced so I can breathe through my nose again kind of.
Slept all night and most of today, so I have ruined my sleep cycle, but at least I feel more normal.
My assessment: first time we got COVID it was two and bit solid weeks of fever fugue state, we have little to no memory other than agony. Second time was about a week and a half and that sucked, like a very awful flu. This time it was a week, with 3 days of utter hell in there. But we’re definitely recovering faster than the first or second time.

Yup. When they were first available, had three in total. Haven’t had any in a few years now tho, not for COVID anyway

I’m really not feeling inspired to paint or draw today. Not feeling art at all. The paint isn’t nicely buttery and I’m feeling insecure about my sketching ability.
I guess there’s always landscapes. I might just gesso a canvas tonight, get one ready to see if that smooths the surface and makes it easier to lay down colour more evenly. It shouldn’t take long to coat one before I have to stop to get the furbaby fed and med.
Also I was actually reading one of the op shop art books and it is ok to use your fingers to paint. Of course you need to consider toxicity of the colours and wash your hands well after but it helps spread paint thinly over large areas. Something that may be necessary for grounds, and helpful when you aren’t using thinners or mediums.

Why are you spending your energy being insecure about something that no body else has to see? That no one else can judge unless you let them? You’ve been spending time on your own technique which no one else can comment on because no one else understands it like you and that is admirable and AWESOME. Enjoy the colours, enjoy the coats, the smears, the fingerprints if you want to follow an op shop art book… of course understanding you have to make sure you clean up and protect Melbcat. But when you can, enjoy the art for what it is.
I hope that doesn’t sound judgy or mean or harsh or anything, I just wish you the best and the enjoyment and just a moment of peace from all that you deal with.

Oh of course there was plenty of thought on how cleanup and disposal needed to be handled and how Melbcat could be protected. That was the top priority.
It almost prevented me trying oils in the first place and led to trying to figure out a technique that involved no solvents or added linseed oil and allowed soap and water cleanup.
But yeah I don’t know. Hobbies aren’t fun lately. Life has been really hard, a lot of recent heavy happenings, and trying to do positive activities just feels like another chore.

Went to the movies and saw Wake up Dead Man, a knives out mystery. It’s a great movie. Lots of twists and turns and Daniel Craig and all the cast were excellent. 4/5 knives.

Hmm… Meta shuts down global accounts linked to abortion advice and queer content. Yep. Going after adult content and age verification was the thin end of the wedge. Depending on how much a certain country’s laws influence ours it might be prudent to make plans regarding long term forms of contraception.
In other news I think I need to change Melbkitty’s flea medicine or be much more consistent with applying it. She managed to get fleas despite being indoor only so I need to pull up my socks on that.

US politics is terrifying. All my life so far I have felt positive about social progress, eg gay marriage, more inclusivity, less racism, sexism etc. To see it go backwards is hard to watch. Really alarming. But, I do have hope. Social media and the internet is an amazing resource to marginalised groups, and even though meta might be censoring, I am hopeful and confident people will still find ways to connect. Meta don’t have the power they think they do. The internet is a very big place. (Also, it’s always prudent to ensure you are using appropriate and reliable contraception. Prevention is better than cure regardless of the political landscape)

It is. I try to avoid focusing on USpol because it’s too much and there’s nothing I can do, there’s been an absolute gish gallop of bad bills and culture wars. But American culture and laws affect Australia and it’s getting harder to ignore.
Of course. I’m talking about being more vigilant than usual and perhaps changing over to a long acting (or even permanent) method juuuust in case.

I accidentally switched to Wednesday’s thread and was wondering why it was so quiet.
I’m still feeling a bit blah with my headache/migraine but I’ve had a fairly productive day. I baked bread and made half a dozen breakfast muffins for the freezer. I made bacon bits to sprinkle on future salads (and made a very impressive catch of a bit of bacon rind which decided to randomly jump out of the frying pans and I grabbed it with my tongs mid-flight). I packaged up a bit more stuff for the freezer and made a start on a fish curry. I was going to have the curry for dinner (with some for the freezer too) but my stomach’s feeling slightly unsettled so I stopped at the marinade step and will finish it tomorrow. I’ve started a pot of chicken with rice & vegies in the rice cooker instead.
I also did a thorough clean of the stove & rangehood (which was needed after spitting bacon fat everywhere. Whoever decided freestanding rangehoods were a good idea should not be allowed to design kitchens. All those extra hard-to-reach surfaces to get covered in dust and lots of thin metal sheeting to amplify the noise of the fan.

It’s getting a bit warm out there, I need to start thinking about moving walks to the early morning or evening again.
After a great day yesterday I woke up late with a headache and feeling very blah. Going on a walk actually helped a bit, but I don’t think I’ll be doing much gardening today. I do have some meat packing to do for the freezer and some washing to bring in from the line. It might be a good day to do a bit more sorting in the sewing room too, I don’t think my brain is up to actual sewing.
