I did a drive at lunchtime and it seems like I can Funnelhack My Commute by car even faster now. There’s a residential street next to a main road that has finally been finished. I’m not sure what the local knowledge is on this one but if I can cruise down there it will cut down the drive home big time

My timing today has been good. I managed to time the dog walk so we didn’t get rained on, and I just managed to weed the front yard in between showers too. I have now removed all visible weeds from the front lawn and the worst of the weeds from the nature strip (focusing on the bindi and other prickly things). I also dug up a few patches of the lawn grass to divide and transplant into a dead corner, which may have been killed by overspray of weedkiller from adjacent paths or may just be out of the pattern the automatic sprinklers reach. The dead root system of the turf in that corner should act as a fairly good weedmat, I just tucked the grass between sheets of that and it will get a layer of topdressing soil and some fertilizer and hopefully fill in the dead corner with good grass.

Eyy I’m in for the second interview, a culture fit interview.

That’s even after accidentally letting slip “bitch” during the first interview 😂👀 context: he asked what I like to do in my free time, and I listed off gaming and reading, and “watching Dragula, because watching drag queens bitch about each other is strangely hilarious”.

    Phew!

Today is 3 weeks since my back muscle injury started and honestly I’m not sure I have seen any improvement. It’s less raw sore but the soreness level has gone down, up, down, up, and today is an up day. It’s really starting to affect me mentally. I don’t want to get out of bed most days because laying flat on my back is about the only position where the muscle feels completely “off”. I’ve never had a muscle injury like this that just keeps going and going. Just want this horror to end.

    source
    • Thornburywitch@aussie.zone ⁨6⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

I’m going to assume that you’ve seen a doctor or physio about this. Backs are hard to fix cos just about EVERYTHING you do uses core muscles that attach to your back at some point. Rest can only do so much - maybe a sport physio could help you a bit more than a regular one?

    • CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone ⁨8⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

Have you seen a doctor about this? Cos I get that there will be up and down days but it should still be on the decline after 3 weeks.

    • Seagoon_@aussie.zone ⁨5⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

      so many hugs,

back injuries are debilitating and depressing , literally the nerve pain signals create depression in your brain

do not do anything that causes pain, that only aggravates the injury and makes healing take longer

      I suggest lots of rest

      anti-inflammatories

      hot water bottles in bed

hot baths to relax muscles and tendons and ligaments

read The Back Mechanic to understand your injury and what you can do

      see a doctor

My scalp has been terribly dry, so I bought some T-gel thinking it was scalp psoriasis. Made it worse. I think it might be the hair-dryer or water is too hot. My whole body is also very dry as well. Aloe vera does help for that. Not for the scalp though.

    • Eagle@aussie.zone ⁨4⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

I think its the weather. Or stress. I currently have eczema in my ears for the first time in my life. Its horrible. I’ve had it elsewhere before, usually triggered by stress or environmental stuff, but ears suck. Maybe some gentle moisture for your scalp?

      source
      • LowExperience2368@aussie.zone ⁨51⁩ ⁨minutes⁩ ago

        Inside your ears? :(

I put some unscented moisturiser yesterday which kinda helped, but not really. I think I need something heavier maybe.

I found if I wash my hair too often, I’m itchy. Not enough and I’m itchy. I’ve now found a balance.

An old remedy I found that worked for me is 1 part cider vinegar and 3 parts water. I put it in a bottle and after I’ve shampooed and rinsed, I’d tip half the bottle on my hair, lightly massage my scalp and let it sit for a couple of minutes before a quick rinse then condition as normal. Be warned. It’s very fucking cold so i warm the bottle first. I haven’t had to do this since I found “the balance”.

I also have dry skin so when I jump in the shower and I’ve warmed up I turn the hot down and periodically do this during my entire shower until it’s just warm before getting out.

      source
      • LowExperience2368@aussie.zone ⁨53⁩ ⁨minutes⁩ ago

Interesting. What’s your balance? I personally wash my hair twice a week.

You don’t want psoriasis. I’ve had it behind my ears since I was 6, and it has never ever gone away. No moisturiser, steroid cream, or change of hair routine has had an effect on it. It comes and goes, recedes and spreads, according to its own will and desire.

It’s probably the weather or stress that has caused your skin dryness. I’ve heard that having a hot shower as normal and then before you get out turn off the hot water and run yourself under the cold, can help as well. Hair dryers also cause damage from what I understand.

        Noo :( that’s not fun.

I am now committed to a full body boot camp over the next couple of days. The weather looks like the best it’s going to be for the forseeable future so I’ve booked in delivery of 1.5m of sandy loam, which I then get to shovel into a wheelbarrow for transport to the back yard. I’ve been warming up with carting bagged mulch and compost, so hopefully this won’t kill me too badly.

If all goes to plan there should be enough there to do a bit of top dressing of the tiny patch of grass at the front to even up a few holes and put a bit on the naturestrip to even that up a bit too, but the bulk is going to the back to try to make it a bit less lumpy. I’ll probably want to do another layer in autumn, but I’ll see how it goes.

I have decided the subject of grass varieties and the best blends is way too complicated for my level of interest. I picked one that is not kikuyu based and is supposed to be hardy. It’s from the landscaping company and one they recommend for the area so hopefully it goes ok. I think for a long-term investment if I wanted a good lawn I’d go for buffalo grass, but it’s only available as turf. I think that’s what’s at the front, and it definitely needs less mowing than the grasses at the back.

I did 2m in a day because I needed the driveway back and that was a workout for sure.

      source
      • RustyRaven@aussie.zone ⁨6⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

The need to get the driveway clear is a great motivator. I think I did 2m in one day last year which nearly killed me, but I had to shovel out at the other end into raised planters, this time I can just dump onto the ground so it should be a lot easier.

The next garden boot camp will probably be bulk mulch delivery, which is still a lot of work but a lot lighter. The current mulch is all sugarcane, which is great for the soil because it breaks down quickly, but I want to get some heavier mulch for the paths and around the natives. Probably the weather is going to go from changeable spring (where I am struggling to find enough time to work where it is not raining) straight to summer (where I struggle to find a day that I won’t roast alive). I can probably put it off until autumn if I need to though.
