I did the meat of my work. The written questions and assessments are done now. But I’ve also got emails to write. Which is easy enough, I write emails all the time! But I have to read through work health and safety policies for a fictional organisation, cross reference with the irl occupational health and safety act, and then reference things in the emails. So it requires a bit more brain capacity than I currently have the space for. That’s a tomorrow job

It was staring at us while we were barbecuing on Sunday. Everybody was sure it was going to try and swoop some bread or a snag, but it just sat there, staring, for an uncomfortably long time. Felt a little bad ngl, but if I feel wildlife, I’d rather feed them something more nutritious than home brand white bread

I’m still thinking about what I saw. The bills being signed in and… that. Media outlets are trying to dismiss it as ‘an awkward gesture’, but… haven’t they ever heard of dogwhistles? :/ And that was barely even disguised. It was so. Obvious. I’m remembering that movie that came out in the 70s, Cabaret. The way the political movement started out looking so rosy, promising to fix things and create a bright future. Well smarter people than me have been calling it for years. The creeping of the big F. But with the ‘return to tradition’ crap and that hand gesture it looks like a play by play. I’m kind of scared what it means for Australia. There’s already the targeting of minorities and buying into the rhetoric of certain groups being ‘degenerates’, so are the people who think that way going to get even more emboldened? Are there going to be issues in the long term and Australian troops might have to fight on America’s side? This is nuts.

  I agree with the people who are saying things to the effect of, “If it’s not (that) then take a video of yourself doing it and email it to your boss, colleagues, clients, police etc. and see if they agree.” It totally is. He knows it is. But don’t be distracted by it. There’s a lot of stuff that got signed off on today that’s just utterly reprehensible. The more Australia distances itself from this shitshow the better. But when it comes to the rich and powerful there are always politicians who are willing to be a bunch of arse lickers and cosy up. I hope ours keep themselves out of it.

  I’m leaning to dog whistle, not accident. Gesture was very distinct and decisive, and he did it twice. Disgusting. I’m horrified. But even if it was just ‘a gesture’, racists will see a message, think he is signalling them. This needs to be instantly and strongly denounced by Musk. Groups like The Proud Boys are Trump worshippers, they feel he represents them. Some of the crazier ones might feel they have freedom to act on their beliefs now. I’m scared for Australia too. I just hope we have enough good people to counter it and weather the storm.

This job has given me a Dell laptop, I had a Dell at my old job as well. I wouldn’t think there would be much difference between laptops these days, but these Dells are so heavy and have terrible battery.

I’ve had a HP previously and that was quite nice, but it seemed like a high end model. And I’ve also had thinkpads which are just reliable and the battery lasts forever by comparison

  Dell are weird. They work all ends of the market - with awful cheap laptops and really decent expensive models.
  
  I think this hurts them, personally - as people who have been issued a garbage laptop come away thinking Dells are heavy and have terrible battery.
  
  I promise there are good Dell laptops. Your job obviously hasn’t given you one.

    I doubt when businesses are buying fleet laptops they go for the good ones.
    
    The HP I had made sense for the department I was in. It had a built in privacy screen you could toggle with the fn keys

  Vostro I’m guessing? Yeah my order of preference is Lenovo > Dell > HP. But their “Entry level” it Vostro, Ideapad and Pavilion are all truely dogshit. HP have NO business being in the corporate space with their laptops.

    I deal intimately with a very large fleet (ie. thousands) at my workplace, mostly Dell Latitudes & Precisions, HP EliteBooks and Apple MacBook Pros.

    Isn’t that more Costco? I thought catch was basically like a platform random stuff listed by various retailers, mostly small-scale no name ones. I bought a set of bedsheets from there and had looked up prices for a mini greenhouse and it wasn’t about buying bulk items necessarily… Though maybe the special deals are

Honestly, I don’t really have much sympathy or pity for the vast majority of America at the moment. I do feel a bit bad for Mexico, Canada, and South America, I reckon they’ll have a pretty tough time of it, and Mexico is certainly going to be demonized at every turn for the next ~4 years at minimum. But as for the people within America, they did choose this. They had the option to vote for the other candidate without fear of persecution or reprisal. I’d certainly have pity if he just marched in, seized control of the country, and started executing his opponents

Also, after what seems like every American on the internet since the advent of the internet has taken every opportunity to bang their chest and yell about how great America is like some sort of political gorilla, I must admit I will be having a chuckle as their country degrades even further and all the idiots that either couldn’t be arsed going and voting, or actively voted for him begin to suffer more and more

(Plus, they’ve so staunchly defended their right to own firearms for so long now, it’s not like they’re defenseless lol. If half the bloody country owns a gun, I don’t see what some walls and a couple dozen people in suits are going to be able to do about a large scale rebellion 🤷‍♂️)

    Yeah, that’s a fair point, and probably the only group of people I do have some sympathy for. And the people being held in those illegal immigration detention centre things, I imagine they’ll have an even tougher time of it than they currently do

    Gotta remember that people in the military are still people. They’re affected by his shit, too
    
    All of their “training” does mean they would likely need to become considerably more pissed off in order to actually do anything, but it’s still a possibility at the end of the day
    
    Also, with enough people, you can defeat anyone. 330m people in America, only 2 million of those are in the military. Maybe throw in another 2 million for police and secret service people. Seems easily doable

Oh that’s nice. Woke up to a notification from my camera. 7:13, somebody I’ve never seen before walked down my driveway and then down to my side gate. I don’t know if they opened it and went beyond there

They look dodgy, maybe homeless, but not really robber material. Sleeves that went beyond and covered their hands, baggy half fallen down pants, and dirty shoes. Their face wasn’t covered, and it doesn’t look like they stole anything. Only stayed 20 secs or so

I don’t necessarily think that they came to cause harm. But it still freaks me out. My side gate doesn’t fully close, either, but I’m waiting on it to be fixed. Some rusted metal has pushed part of it out, so the latch can’t be put into place, so I can’t padlock it. But it does close somewhat if I push it enough

    Definitely considering it. As well as an outdoor camera mounted on the eve as near that side gate (no good place to position my internal cameras inside that has a view of that area). I saw one that has a camera and auto floodlight, so I might get that

  Agreed. After some of the stuff that’s happened here, anyone sketchy looking or behaving oddly sets off alarm bells. Yay hypervigilance!
  
  (Ps. Just saw one neighbour steal a potted plant from another neighbour’s house. The poor lady is no longer living there but… lol. classy.)
  
  There are battery powered trail cameras to cover awkward spots but I haven’t tried one yet and it seems like a hassle.

Random Q: how often do gas meter readers generally read?

They’ve been coming weekly to read my meter, and it just seems a little strange that they check so often, especially considering my billing period is monthly (or at least that’s what they said. They actually seem to issue my bills every 26 days, which is an odd frequency but eh)

  I’ve never noticed it that frequently. I would guess once a quarter where I live. I would call the gas company to check what’s going on. It costs them money to send people out so they wouldn’t do it for no reason?

    I’ve actually just noticed that they’ve marked my gas account as “(closed)”. I don’t really know what that means or why. They’ve issued my first gas bill, which I haven’t paid yet, but isn’t due for a few weeks, but it makes it sound like they’ve disconnected me, which I don’t see a reason for (and they also haven’t - I still have gas)
    
    Anyway, hopefully I’ll find out what’s happening soon
