FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 2 years ago
Never mind international cities, Indiana has a New Chicago. I don’t know how that even works.
Lt_Worf@lemmy.ca 2 years ago
We must find a newer Chicago.
phoneymouse@lemmy.world 2 years ago
Only to be outdone when someone discovers the newest Chicago.

New York —> new Amsterdam —> Amsterdam (Netherlands)
generic@iusearchlinux.fyi 2 years ago
Even old New York was once New Amsterdam. Why’d they change it? I can’t say. People just liked it better that way!
CetaceanNeeded@lemmy.world 2 years ago
So take me back to Constantinople
afraid_of_zombies@lemmy.world 2 years ago
I have a friend who has a house fairly close to New York City that was built by the Dutch. Just a fun fact.
poudlardo@jlai.lu 2 years ago
To second his, Harlem the neighbourhood in New York originates from Haarlem, an actual city near Amsterdam.
flames5123@lemmy.world 2 years ago
But new Amsterdam is gin.
gullible@kbin.social 2 years ago
What a waste. To think we could have had a new war of the roses if the New Lancastrians hadn’t ducked out.

Lemmylefty@lemmy.world 2 years ago
I dunno but it’s the size of England.

When you learn that Mexicans named New Mexico…
AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 2 years ago
Spaniards named New Mexico a couple centuries before Mexico existed.
s_s@lemmy.one 2 years ago
The Mexica existed long before the Spanish arrived. They migrated to the Valley of Mexico from a land in the north they referred to as Aztlán when the Toltecs went into decline.
Nuevo Mexico was named by the Spanish in reference to this history, as they were following the Rio Grande north searching for the Cities of Gold referenced in these same Mexica (ie Aztec) legends.
basxto@discuss.tchncs.de 2 years ago
Yes, US annexed New Mexico and Texas, which originally belonged to Mexico.
AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 2 years ago
Kind of. The Spanish named New Mexico in the 1600s, and it was a much larger territory than the current state. The Mexicans named Mexico in 1821 when they gained their independence from Spain, and they acquired New Mexico as well. Then the US annexed it in the late 1800s.
Spur4383@lemmy.world 2 years ago
And California…

RIP New Amsterdam
silvercove@lemdro.id 2 years ago
Everybody knows that new Mexico is not part of the USA! 🤣
AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 2 years ago
New Mexico was named such before Mexico was named. The Spaniards named a much larger territory that encompassed all of the current state of New Mexico, New Mexico. A couple centuries later the Mexican people revolted and gained their independence, and named the country Mexico in 1821
mycelium_underground@lemmy.world 2 years ago
New Mexico was New Mexico long before Mexico was Mexico
basxto@discuss.tchncs.de 2 years ago
Well, but New York is actually named after the duke of York
son_named_bort@lemmy.world 2 years ago
There’s a new Mexico now?
Lt_Worf@lemmy.ca 2 years ago

afraid_of_zombies@lemmy.world 2 years ago
Why did they change it?
Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de 2 years ago
I think Virginia is worst of the lot, as it was named after Elizabeth the first; the virgin queen.
DragonTypeWyvern@literature.cafe 2 years ago
(definitely wasn’t a virgin)
TwinTusks@outpost.zeuslink.net 2 years ago
Its so shameful that Elizabeth I would stole Virginia from Virginia.
xNIBx@kbin.social 2 years ago
New Mexico predates Mexico. From wikipedia
agoseris@lemm.ee 2 years ago
True, but the meme cites Mexico City, which was called “Mexico City” before New Mexico was established
Lt_Worf@lemmy.ca 2 years ago
So Mexico should be New New Mexico, and New Mexico should be Old New Mexico.
afraid_of_zombies@lemmy.world 2 years ago
We could just call one North and the other South. And then write a popular folk song that calls out landmarks South Mexico that are really Southern North Mexico. Country Roads style.
