If it’s garbage then I’ll downvote it and maybe block the user if they continue to post garbage in the future.
Yes it’s effort, but is it constructive?

Yes it’s effort, but is it constructive?
Depends on how you value constructiveness
Yeah that constructiveness is purely subjective. Well it’s constructive based on my own personal point of view. And it might not align with other people.
Most of the instances have disabled downvoges
Wow that’s so lame.
Testing if this one does, please down vote
Some maybe, most I doubt. The largest instance certainly hasn’t.
I know one of them. It’s called youtube
Up vote = I agree
Down vote = I disagree
Reported = I super disagree
And anyone who says that they don’t do this is a bloody liar.
I don’t report things I disagree with, but I type long responses and usually delete before sending so ha! That will show them.
I’ll say it and I’m not a liar.
Upvote= needs to be seen more. (I could disagree strongly but feel others should see it. )
I’ll downvote propagation of memes I don’t like.
For me is
I agree: upvote
I disagree: nothing or maybe response
I think they rare stupid or a troll: downvote and block.
I’m fed up with something and it keeps popping up: mass downvotes.
Removed = I did not like it :(
I’m pretty sure the intent when upvotes and downvotes were created was to use them in regards to relevance. Is the topic about ducks and someone is going off about jeeps? Downvote. Is the community about posting DIY peanut butter but someone keeps posting Skippy™? Downvote.
It shouldn’t have anything to do with agreeing, effort, or anything like that. Just a way to keep the topic/community on track.
disagree. downvote.
I wholeheartedly agree with that. Also earlier when the dude was posting racist memes and everyone downvoted, I liked that usage.
This is due to the fact that racist memes are never relevant, automatic downvote!
Isn’t that what was specified in the original reddiquette? Downvote to maintain quality, but not to disagree?
This is silly though, isn’t it? Most people think most things that they disagree with are low quality by nature of being something they disagree with.
Whatever was intended for them, IMO upvotes and downvotes work because everyone just uses them however they want, and the sum total of everyone doing that averages out to a somewhat passable quality sorting system. Trying to tell people how to use their upvotes and downvotes is just yelling into the wind.
Think before you downvote and take a moment to ensure you’re downvoting someone because they are not contributing to the community dialogue or discussion.
From reddiquette. You are not supposed to downvote people you disagree with so long as they are contributing to the discussion. I’m not sure if I ever saw this guide line followed in my ten years of Reddit though.
Yes, that’s more than likely where I first learned about it.
Intent is irrelevant. Humans don’t work that way and will continue to downvote what they don’t like/agree with and upvote what they do like/agree with. Creating a system that ignores how people work and asking them to please use it how you want will never work.
Everyone should just embrace how it’s actually used and move on.
I use it as a “you should read this” button. Even if it’s offtopic, I’ll upvote if it’s funny or useful.
I like this explanation the best. Net vote count is a decent proxy for whether something is worth reading.
the reason I upvote a post can differ. sometimes it’ll be because I agree with it, sometimes it’ll be because I want more people to see it and interact with it.
My favourite type of person.
I upvote signal and downvote noise. Novelty is good whether I agree with it or not, redundancy is bad.
Spot on. Though the website deals with that much more gracefully than the apps
This isn’t Reddit, there’s no account-wide tracking of special Internet points to worry about.
It’s about scoring to help sorting through content that’s relevant, not a competition for points.
Yeah, that was my point.
Yeah but if someone gets points, they’re more likely to post again.
And why would you encourage that if you dont want t the stuff they post?
Only if they are have no self esteem and need validation from strangers, upvotes are mostly fluff, downvotes when not abused are the better way of doing things
Someone says the earth is flat… downvote, someone says I wonder why they think like that let’s try and understand why they think like that doesn’t deserve a downvote, but with the current online echo chambers on both sides these are how downvotes are used
I just want to encourage to post and keep posting.
Yes, there is. You have 705 post score and 565 comment score.
Well. The points are there in the backend, right? I guess you are saying we just shouldn’t worry about them.
I liked being able to look at someone’s comment history and karma score to determine if they were a troll. Also liked how many subreddits wouldn’t let you post until you had a bit of positive karma in the sub.
I upvote is I agree, I downvote if I disagree. I ignore if I don’t care. Shrimple as.
Upvote = I laughed. That’s what I came for. To many occasions nowadays where a post’s main purpose is something other than making me laugh
If everything is upvoted then doesn’t that kind of defeat the point? Isn’t the point of voting to raise the good stuff to the top? So I don’t have to browse furry porn to see some news highlights or shitposts.
You mean you don’t have to browse news highlights or shitposts to see furry porn
You can not upvote stuff you don’t feel is particularly tailored for you
This man’s playing both sides so always ends up on top.
Sometimes I see memes I don’t agree with, but I’ll still upvote if they’re funny. If you can’t laugh at yourself every now and then, you’re probably not a secure person
Why should we care what motivates people to upvote or downvote?
I only upvote comments if the person posted something I was going to post myself. Saves me time. If I think the post itself is cool I upvote the post.
Has anyone made a Simpsons shitpost thing I can join? That’s pretty much all I miss from reddit. That and Slay by Comment

I frequently upvote amd comment here as a means of contribution because we need to make Lemmy bigger and pull in users.
I upvote everyone who answers on one of my posts or comments, except for trolls.
Innit!
I agree!
Fine. Here’s my upvote. 😅
Thank you, but this was actually inspired by a post I saw where someone said something disagreeable to most, but I was just grateful they tried. Especially with how slow yesterday was.
Actually never thought of it this way before, but that may have also been the point the way reddit works changed

Get off your high fucking horse. Upvotes are for content you want to see, downvotes are due content you don’t. Can we stop pretending there’s some bullshit morality attached or that they’re for anything other than base popularity?
