This is not Xiaomi's fault, it's Google's. It's the limitation of the gesture navigation in the older Android versions (Android 10 or so). Nothing Xiaomi can do about it on Android 10, even if they wanted. I'm not sure how much better it is these days, but I've heard now it can work with 3rd party launchers to some degree.

This limitation exists on my Xiaomi phone that runs Android 13
ichbean@lemm.ee 1 year ago
This is not Xiaomi’s fault, it’s Google’s Gestures worked fine on MIUI 11. In the initial A12 update gestures stopped working, but you could at least circumvent it by using 3rd party gestures app like Edge Gestures. Then, a few months later Xiaomi released the update that killed even app gestures. That’s when I said fuck it, and installed a custom ROM, where gestures work with any launchers.
What’s your experience with full screen gestures and custom launchers, Pixel owners?
Ghoelian@feddit.nl 1 year ago
I’m on a Pixel 6 pro with Android 13 and have tried both Lawnchair and Smart launcher, I personally haven’t had any issues with gesture navigation on either.
MonkderZweite@feddit.ch 1 year ago
Hunh? Some launchers already have had built-in gestures when Kitkat was still a thing.
stappern@lemmy.one 1 year ago
why have i never encountered this in any other phone ever?
TheEntity@kbin.social 1 year ago
Have you tried using Android 10 with gesture navigation and 3rd party launchers before? Maybe you just never had this combination of factors. It happens for all smartphone brands, it's a problem with Android 10 itself.
gibs@lemmy.nz 1 year ago
I definitely ran in to this same issue on my old phone running Android 10 ( i think it was either a Nokia or Moto). It is definitely an Android thing rather than a Xiaomi thing
C4Phoenix@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Yes, We have the same problem with samsung phones as well.
dingleberry@discuss.tchncs.de 1 year ago
There are dozens of launchers on Play Store that work just fine. Is Xiaomi BS 💯
TheEntity@kbin.social 1 year ago
What version of Android did you test them on?
lemann@lemmy.one 1 year ago
Might be android versions even older than that I think, my FP3 runs Android 10 and I can use fullscreen gesture navigation with my third party launcher (Niagara)
SuperSleuth@lemm.ee 1 year ago
My LG V60 didn’t have this problem. I used Niagara and Nova launcher full time on it.
5redie8@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
For a very privacy leaning site, a whole lot of you have sketchy ass phones that spy on you for basically everything
emergencyfood@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
For a given price range, Xiaomi hardware is probably the best in the world. And MIUI is built to maximise battery life and do more with less RAM and CPU. But this comes at the price of MIUI being very brittle and unable to handle modifications.
On the other hand, Xiaomi has good support for custom ROMs. So you can buy their phones, and immediately switch to a ROM of your choice (at the cost of losing MIUI’s efficiency).
TimeNaan@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Well, not quite immediately. You have to wait a few weeks for them to unlock your bootloader

If you are going to use a xiaomi phone you have to at least put a custom ROM on it.
Guster@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Am I weird for like MIUI 🥲
wason@lemmy.ninja 1 year ago
You can use MIUI by Xiaomi.eu. It’s a custom rom based on Chinese MIUI.
Chinese MIUI has more features than the other regional roms. Everytime they showcase a new MIUI version most of the features only arrive to the Chinese rom, all other regions get just basic stuff.
drbi@lemmy.world 1 year ago
They are probably waiting on the unlocking period.

I’m done with Xiaomi. Good hardware but very intrusive software. Just to change the ringtone or the notification sound I have to accept being spied by them. Had to use a 3rd party software to change these. Wallpapers? Nah, accept the terms to be spied on as you use our theme software. I’m done, writing this on a Redmi Note 11 but already ordered a Moto G23 to replace it. Love the screen of the Note 11 but tired of the bullshit push to relinquish control of the device.
Will try the Pixel Experience ROM after I transfer everything to the new phone but I need banking apps working, not much hopeful.
XEAL@lemm.ee 1 year ago
LineageOS solved this issue for me.
It’s a little outdated model, but on late 2022 I got a brand new Redmi Note 9 Pro (2020) just so I could have a Xiaomi without MIUI cancer. I’m using it right now.
The problem is finding an offically supported model, otherwise you rely on people who post their custom LineageOS roms on forums.
wipeitonthedog@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Even worse is the Calculator app lmao. I was baffled when I had to sing some terms and Conditions to upload my data in order to use the calculator app.
nodiet@feddit.de 1 year ago
I’m typing this from an unrooted xiaomi phone with lineage for microg where I can use banking apps. The only downside is having to connect to a computer every time I install an update.
MrRazamataz@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Banking apps work on Pixel Experience along with Google pay. Writing this from my Mi 9T Pro with PE android 13 installed.
herrvogel@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Writing this on a Redmi note 10 running pixel experience. Banking apps all work fine. I haven’t had any issues with stuff like that.
TheMadnessKing@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Same. On X3 Pro running CrDroid. The lroblem I face is that battery backup is not that good, the launcher’s recent menu is buggy sometimes, and gestures are not great as MIUi. (Like can’t swipe back on Gbaord to close it.)
Otherwise a lot better in every aspect than MIUi. No junk of apps and lot better privacy.
TwanHE@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I haven’t encountered an app that doesn’t work after using magisk to hide root acces.
Btw xiaomi.eu ROMs are also a good option next to lineageOS.
basketdou@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I had experienced that on a Vivo phone. The worst device i’ve ever got it. The only advantage is a Snapdragon as a CPU.
Tippon@lemmy.world 1 year ago
It’s not even good hardware.
I’ve got a Mi 10t Lite, and the camera is useless. It randomly blurs patches of photos when it takes them, especially if you dare to use the zoom
AndreyAsimow@lemmy.world 1 year ago
It’s terribly annoying. Since they killed PCmode I dropped my tab and more often on my phone.
stappern@lemmy.one 1 year ago
i was speechless my GF has a note 10 pro or something and wanted to pimp it up but i had to tell her " i guess you have to choose between the cool gestures or the cool launcher…"
AceSLS@lemmy.sdf.org 1 year ago
That’s one of the reasons I had for changing to Evolution X rom. Also my battery lifetime doubled (Mi 11)
Would recommend looking into custom roms and rooting if you really want to pimp her phone ;)
someguy3@lemmy.ca 1 year ago
I haven’t thought about different launchers for years. What launcher do you want to go to and why?
sznio@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I got a note 10 pro as well.
First thing I did after I got it was to install LineageOS. It’s so much better.
kluevo@lemmy.world 1 year ago
As someone who switched from my beloved huawei p30 to a xiaomi 12, I regret my choice so much. Sure, huawei isn’t very open with rooting and bootloadersetc etc either, but installing a goddamn apk app didn’t take a whole extra minute becuase xiaomi wants me to be absolutely sure that I trust the maker and locks me out of clicking ‘I’m sure’ for 10s. Nor did it constantly try to turn off developer mode. Or turn off my ui customizations that run in the bg. Grrr
Not sure of what brand I’m gonna try next, might try the now independent Honor, or maybe give up and go with samsung, but my next phone will definitely not be a xiaomi
SwellowTheSun@lemmy.sdfeu.org 1 year ago
I buy Xiaomi phones purely for the absurd hardware/price quality ratio. Been using the brand since 2015 and I absolutely love it.
Custom roms is what make Xiaomi phones great. I’m so happy with my brand new Poco F5.
tclement09@lemmy.world 1 year ago
That is exactly why I switched to a custom rom (plus the fact that on top of these issues, I was stuck on an outdated version of the OS because my carrier wanted to include it’s crappy apps no one ever used). Imo Xiaomi phones are very good on the hardware side, but the software is horrible to use when you’re used to a near-AOSP OS.
mojo@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Isn’t this a general Android issue?
C3D@lemmy.world 1 year ago
It was an issue back in Android 10 when google first added gestures to AOSP but it’s since been fixed. Xiaomi, though, only does this to make switching launchers less tempting so that they can have more data about you
zerozaku@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Fixed? I am on Android 13 custom ROM and I still have that ghosting effect while accessing recent apps when I use third party launchers.

AndreTelevise@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Gestures aren’t very convenient if I’m watching videos in full screen mode or when typing on the keyboard. There are many problems with gesture nav in Android, let alone MIUI. It’s not worth keeping the default launcher for this.

What version of Android? I thought this had to do with a certain version of Android. People were freaking out because they thought Android was going to natively make it harder to use 3rd party launchers but the truth was there was a version of Android that had a hard time with 3rd party launchers and gestures because it broke them and caused them to freak out or something.
