I honestly don’t see how the idea of everyone getting an equal share is an extremist idea
I agree.
Should I be labelled an extremist for being completely fine with, let’s say, a completely democratic business structure, where workers have equal say? A public transport system owned by the people, to serve the people? An education system owned by teachers, allowing teachers to do their best, instead of being overworked and having to pay for classroom supplies at their own cost? Nowhere does it say we’d remove the options for people to use a car, or force them into a packed subway or whatever, and nobody claims it would be a magical perfect system that solves all issues. But somehow the mere idea is extremist 🤯
This idea being conflated/confused with an authoritarian leadership style also causes a lot of problems IMO

Wow I’m actually surprised Youtube stepped in on this one, since they rarely do. Hopefully it sends a strong message to the channel owner - according to another commenter here apparently this wasn’t their first time doing something like this

Video has 47K dislikes on RYD 😂 I wonder how many are in the YT dashboard 😳
On a serious note though, why anyone do this, in Japan of all places, and think it would make for a good Youtube video?
Looking at the generally very friendly culture in Japan towards foreigners, and their extremely clean and effective transport network, I wouldn’t even consider abusing people’s kindness to travel around for free!

Ouch, I doubt anyone would he looking forward to babysitting their idling car for 2 hours, just to install a navigation update 😭
Older vehicles and standalone GPSes allowed people to just order a physical pre-loaded SD card, insert it into the appropriate slot, and that’s your maps sorted with no idling or babysitting.
While it’s nice that there’s no longer the excess physical electronic waste with the SD cards, I find it hard to see the cloud alternative as an improvement

🔥Hot take - I think unless the post being disagreed with is some kind of troll or spam post, the op or ocer might appreciate a discussion around it.
People usually disagree because they view something from a different perspective, and most times that perspective could be a valuable thing to share IMO

There are lemmy instances where downvotes are disabled. It also affects the sorting ‘algorithm’ too IIRC, so browsing on a no-downvote instance vs the opposite can yield quite a different looking feed.
It also allows you to look at content from a different perspective, rather than passing by something that’s been bonked with tons of downvotes.
Active moderation is pretty key though where there isn’t the possibility to downvote, mainly because off topic/spam content can’t be downvoted and won’t disappear from feeds unless deleted by a mod.
Lemmy mods are generally really proactive with removing spam/offtopic stuff IMO, so I’d say to give it a shot if you’re interested. A lot of no-downvote instances aren’t federated with lemmy.world though, and my current one has closed signups so it might be tricky.

R.I.P. my city’s previous bike share scheme, ruined by vandals wrecking the charging docks and stealing the bikes. Our tax money could not save it due to corruption laws AFAIK

One of the only MOPs in my village’s local authority meetings.
Use public transport as I’m against overdependence on cars - it’s futile because cuts are made anyway, and combined usage costs as much as owning a car to begin with. The buses are very comfortable and air conditioned though 👍
Voting for a difference, but the status quo stays the same because everyone here is being fed the same sweet talk by a government that has said on the record that they are not interested in building new housing while there is an ongoing shortage.
Taking part in temporary government funded schemes, set up with the intent to collect feedback guiding future areas of expenditure.
And much more.
It’s all a waste of time though, nothing changes as a result. I say the UAW have got the right idea for going for what will hurt the most. People living paycheck to paycheck deserve better than this, or even worse, those stuck in endless debt. Last year the energy costs around here were equivalent to buying a new PS5 every month.
We can can shout all we like into the echo chamber here about possible solutions - but is the everyday voter even educated about how any of the existing institutions work? Asking people on an online internet forum what they are doing in their community, in an elitist condescending tone, does nothing to further this IMO. A union doing things like this, is everything that does.

UAW members being poor doesn’t really play any importance here in my opinion - if we were to use this way of thinking for protests, restricting them to only those directly affected/impacted by the subject of said protest, IMO there would either be no change or things could get violent.
If anything, you as a person in authority could easily silence the whole problem at that point by wiping out the protesters.
I think it is better for the people who care to do something, regardless of whether they are affected or not, since the alternative is for society’s most exploited people taken advantage of even more

Of course.
IMO the oc came across as unnecessarily condescending, versus just saying “I think it’s stupid”. The least we can do is not discourage people from posting, even if we don’t agree with what or how they post

That seems like it could be maybe a cultural thing, or maybe even how the same word can convey a very different feeling in another accent.
If someone pronounces Lady as “lāh dih” instead of “lay dee”, the former feels odd compared to the latter, at least to me anyway.
And then there’s also probably a stigma associated with the time period and circumstances in which a woman was referred to as a lady, which may also make it sound off when used today.
I think referring to women as females is far ruder though personally, “Female” feels like “an individual that is not a male”, but Lady feels more like “A woman” with more pizzazz, if we ignore its past connotations
- Comment on [deleted] 1 year ago:
I got curious after reading this, and had a mess around in a translator with various words used to address ladies in different languages.
For french at least, “Woman” turned into “Wife”, but “Females” stayed the same. Assuming the translator I used is any good, I can see there why a french speaker would call a lady “Female” instead of “Woman”
