    I heard that French people take off work much of May and then all of August. Are you French?

    Also do waiters eat after lunch and dinner service? or do they shove their faces quickly during meal service?

      There is not strict rules for days off in France.

      It depends mostly of your work. Some work will force you to put your days off in the summer but that’s not super common. Most jobs just let you use your days off however you want.

      And no it’s not a misunderstanding, some employers actually don’t want their staff to work in the summer because all businesses slow down and people are in vacations.

      Basically it mostly depends of your line of work but most people are free to choose when they take their days off. They just happen to often take them in the summer. That way if they have kids they can spend time with them while they are on summer break.

      Some others will on the contrary put their days outside of the school holidays because travelling and tourism is cheaper when most people are not expected to work.

      Basically a lot of it depends if you have kids and when their holidays are. Each region of france has different schedule for school holidays. So it somehow guides a lot of the days off placed by workers.

      Also do waiters eat after lunch and dinner service? or do they shove their faces quickly during meal service?

      I’m not sure but usually it seemed to me like they tend to eat after service but really it all depends of the manager of the restaurant.

      No, we do not work during august. We are all on strike, supermarkets are closed and we are all starving to death. That’s why the population is halved every year.

  You could turn that around: if everyone eats at different times, the waiters never have time to eat because they have to work at all times.

  But if everyone eats at the same time, then waiters can easily eat before or after that.

  July and August vacation are the normal schools holidays. So it’s mostly families with kids who takes those months.

  Other people would ideally try to avoid those months because they are packed and more expensive, so they are available to work.

  But it will vary from jobs to jobs, maybe in some sectors business is slow so the company is closing and you are forced to be off, like it can happen around Christmas.

  Same goes for lunch time, some of us have to sacrifice themselves to work because capitalism and rent to pay.

  In restaurants before service begins, the whole staff sit down to family meal or staff meal.

  It is something different staff will take turns making staff meal. It is made using ingredients that may a mix of leftovers or new recipes not ready for the menu.

  Waiters love winter and kitchen staff love summer so waiters work all summer through August and take February off, that is why the cooks take so long to get your food out in summer. They left the dishwasher in charge of the dinner service.

    That’s how it was at the restaurant I worked at here, also the waiters were union. They all ate together before the supper shift.
