Still weird to me that 3/5 is accepted as bad. It’s middle of the score; it’s average. I have plenty of 3 star movies I watched and I like it just fine.
But yes mostly nowadays I just watch with the right cat’s eyes lol
WolfLink@sh.itjust.works 2 days ago
I kinda mentally adjust it. If I see 7/10 I assume it’s very average. 8/10 is good, 9/10 and above is great.
6/10 is bad and anything worse is awful.

That’s the way to go. it’s just a silly little nitpick that I have. I don’t go out of my way to make it a big deal lol

I’m so tired of content made to be consumed. The entire world is monetizing my attention. Putting your eyes on anything is giving into the corpos. Art should make you feel human not “satisfied”.

Let’s assume 3/5 corresponds to a 50% rating and that this percentage represents the ratio of good, so 50% of the film (not necessarily duration) is good, the other 50% is bad. People generally want a film where the good parts outweigh the bad parts. For a film to be really enjoyable it needs to be way above 50%. Mathematically speaking this means current rating systems have an exponential behaviour. For practical purposes it would be better to have logarithmic rating systems as that would compress bad ratings to a few low numbers and give more nuance to good ratings.

Kinda mid bruh ngl roughly translates to “waste of my precious life”.
Its either 10/10 perfection or fuck off.

Yeah that’s fair actually. Idk why I’m still hung up on that scoring but what you’re saying is what I’m doing lol
I haven’t watched many shows or movies for the past decade willy nilly because of that.

I can’t stand movie critics who judge a film based on what they think a movie should be doing, instead of what it’s trying to do.
For example, a dumb action/superhero movie should be exciting, fast paced, and have some humor thrown in. Anything else is a bonus. Evaluate it on that basis. Don’t give it half a star because it’s not Citizen Kane.
PieMePlenty@lemmy.world 2 days ago
They often do criticize these movies based on what the movie is trying to say. They’re not comparing them to movies in other genres.
Superhero movies are often formulaic, predictable, overly rely on CGI, have shallow stories and plots. Logan, The Dark Knight, Spider Verse etc. were praised by critics for not committing the same mistakes other super hero movies do. The criticisms describe what kept the movie back from being a truly great super hero movie, not what kept it back from being Citizen Kane.
And even after all that, they’re still subjective opinions. You don’t have to agree with them on what a better super hero movie looks like.

This is what it is like when I watch Christopher Nolan movies since Tenet. I know some people really like how he tries to be deep now, but I miss when he made the Batman movies and Inception. They weren’t winning Oscars, but they were fun.
thethrilloftime69@feddit.online 2 days ago
How were Batman and Inception not deep?
stark@sopuli.xyz 3 days ago
Inception won 4 Oscars and The Dark Knight has won 2.

I watched Tenet and after a few days of reflection I was like “yep, I understand the whole thing”

for me it was the other way around. after watching it i thought that I got everything. The more I truely thought about the time mechanics I saw more and more ridiculous holes in the logic

I’m the one on the right :(
If you give me a plot and at all, and develop the characters enough for me to feel for them, i’ll like it.
if:
- You don’t do matrix 4 style and chance fight cutscenes every 700ms.
- You don’t ruin the nostalgia of something I cared about with it.
- you don’t constantly break the 4th wall in an unfunny way

so i saw this band a couple weeks ago. i wish i had a better recording, because their cover of john lee hooker’s boom boom was mind blowing. it was one of those shows where the frisson was electric in the air. if that wasn’t the best show of their life i want to be there to hear it, and i’ll go to every one of their shows i can so i get the opportunity to, they are fun to sing along with.
were they breaking new ground? nah, they’re a cover band. but they’re fun. like i use at least a cane when i go out. i wanted to dance all three sets they were up for. it was at a seafood restaurant in Morro Bay, CA (i don’t know the name of the restaurant. Tagliazzi’s? I just kind of was walking down the wharf with my wife and followed my nose until i saw a band and a smoker. like, BBQ smoker) and we snagged a table before they ran out. If you were there, uh, two thursdays ago i was the dude with the cat hat.

Some films are made for turning your brain off and some films are made for turning it on. The important thing is whether the filmmaker succeded in what they were aiming to do.

And it lines up with the expectations of the viewer.
