He bought the shipyard so he could direct them to refit the yacht to also have a docking bay and facilities for a submersible, (and also a LAN party room lol) which he has since gone on to use to plumb the deep seas south of Japan, mapping various trench beds in high detail, and possibly capturing some never before seen hadal zone creatures on camera.

Gabe also funds actual legitimate neuroscience / medical brain implant research. Unlike Elon’s Neuralink… which poached a PHD’s research team and then basically stole and claimed credit for inventing a certain kind of brain implant tech… and then ran around saying he was gonna change the world with this half baked dubious tech, untill he got bored / came down from ketamine…
Gabe is a bit more hands off and just actually lets the experts do expert things, try to discover and invent new ways to help people with Parkinsons and such… the goal isn’t primarily to make money, it is to do research.

He’s closer to an old school American business tycoon… an actual philanthropist who has more money than he knows what to do with, so he throws it at things he thinks are neat and could contribute to society in some way.

I was disappointed by The Way of Water. For a guy who’s spent more time undersea than… basically anyone who isn’t a navy soldier in a submarine… it doesn’t really come across in the movie. I mean, we didn’t even see coral bleaching! In what is supposed to be an anti-colonial environmental movie!

Actually, technically, the way teleportation works in Half Life/Portal universe…
They are aliens, extraterrestrials, they’re not from … a mirror realm, a distinct and different universe.
Xen acts as a kind of … bus stop, for the universe, if that makes any sense. But it does exist somewhere in our Universe, it is not in an alternate universe/timeline ala Marvel different universes.
Xen is a relay, that, for whatever reason, seems to be a spot in the actual universe where transdimensional travel often … ends up at, or traverses through. Like a strange attractor in a chaotic system.
So this goes for the Combine as well. Xen, Vorts, Headcrabs, the Combine… they are all from our Universe, though they could be from totally different galaxies than our own.
The teleportation tech/system in the HL/Portal Universe works more like the Webway from 40k, than it is like the Warp from 40k.
It is a system / series of gateways in … string theoretic 11 dimensional space, that in our 3d experience of reality, appear as basically a complex network of subway tunnels, semi-stable wormholes. The Combine make great use of this, the Human Resitance barely understand it, but use it in different ways, and the Portal tech just most directly punches wormholes through 3d space via … fucking moondust or something.
… even in the instances in the series where time itself is … paused or traversed… by G Man or the Vorts … these occurences seem to all take place inside of a single consistent and coherent universe.

Actually ☝️🤓, that is a common urban myth. We have mapped virtually everything down there, we were not everywhere with submarines and cameras but as far as i know virtually all of the deep sea has been mapped from the surface and the general consensus is that there is nothing spectacular or extraordinary down there.
Maybe an unusual or unknown species here and there, but nothing like some unknown frontier for mankind with potentially revolutionary discoveries.

If we’re being nitpicky and technical, stick to the moons of Jupiter. Anything outside our solar system is practically inaccessible. Information that can’t be discovered with telescopes is gonna stay undiscovered. The deep ocean and the little shoal of our planetary neighbors at least has the potential for further study.
