joke aside, the Hippodrome was your common low key football game, with betting and people going crazy. The Colloseum on the other side was a special occasion where you better looked your best and behaved. Hollywood never got the memo.

Um… acshelly! Hippo in Greek means horse.
* Pushes glasses up nose bridge.

Hippopotamus means river horse, I don’t think whoever named these things has ever seen a horse.

excuse me! we had both chariot races and slave chariot races. that’s TWO games

The circus maximus (the big hippodrome in Rome) also hosted gladiatorial fights and athletics competitions. The meme is misleading in the way it selects the venues.

These are memes reality has no place here

Did you hear they were working on horse races? I know quite antiquated, but they were adding horse TORCH races this time! How novel!
HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 month ago
You mean they torch the horses then race them?

By this logic, the greatest modern console is the smartphone.
frostlytt@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 month ago
i mean, slap a controller on a smartphone and it is actually pretty solid, so maybe youve got a point…

Horse race tracks rent out to different groups for conventions and such when not racing horses - I wouldn’t be surprised if that happened in ancient Rome too.
Fedizen@lemmy.world 1 month ago
I do feel like the amount of people required to staff the colloseum is like two orders of magnitude higher than a racetrack

Okay but a lot of those Colosseum games are just the same cookiecutter format with different branding.
“Gladiator combat” “Barbarian Battle” “Martyrs” it’s the same shit with different characters.
“Man vs. Beast” “Hunting Simulator” YAWN
At least the later gen hippodromes added a variety of jousting tournaments…
Sergio@piefed.social 1 month ago
I think you mean “same game, different skin,” right?
wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 1 month ago
Yeah, true
Pat_Riot@lemmy.today 1 month ago
I got no use for a console with no racing games. I’ll be over here playing my hippodrome.
Fedizen@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Horses tho.

All of those are just a variant on gladiator fighting.

This post was written by average red team enjoyer. Reds haven’t won anything since antiquity because they’re so inferior to Blue/Green. Even smooth brain green team supporters know this.

The last time I went to the colosseum they dragged a rapist out of retirement for a big bout and he only lasted 69 seconds after talking so much shit.

I paid 15,000 [asses] (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/As_(Roman_coin)?wprov=sfla1) for a ticket to that fight

Another game for the Colosseum: Overwatch.

Hippodrome also looks like a fairly decent Jousting Pitch

Plus chariot racing wasn’t even hippodrome exclusive

One of them had hooligans with real influence on politics in the Byzantine empire.
