Went to the museum. The kids wanted to go but I’m not really into it anymore. The “new” museum doesn’t really do it for me the way the old one did. I like the history of Melbourne display, pharlap and the outside forest bit but to me it’s just a cavernous space with convention centre vibes.

I agree. The old cabinet museum style is more interesting in a way. There is more discovery as you see things. You have to make a effort too. There are more objects. And it’s not dumbed down. Also, it’s like an adventure in time to see old buildings and exhibits made in the past. That’s a part of our history too.
But it’s not the museum’s fault. A lot of the exhibits are now so old they require repairs and special preservation before they can go on display again.
I was sad to see the Foucault’s Pendulum had moved to Melbourne Uni. It was one of few in the Southern Hemisphere and proof the world is round and rotates!
The museum shop is so very disappointing, I could buy the things they sell just about anywhere.
and really expensive. It used to be free. It used to be in the centre of the city . It was once the most visited tourist attraction in Melbourne. But Crown Casino got built and Jeff’s mates didn’t want the competition.

True, and I guess at some point it became important for museums to generate an income, so a lot of displays are “interactive” (push a button, funky lighting) and aimed towards attracting little kids.
On another subject, I thought at some point today, I miss how rich people used to be (was probably looking at the Coles Book Arcade display). As in, for example, “I’m rich and I believe all people should get to enjoy art,” “I’m rich and I believe all people should have access to books/botanical gardens/museums etc.” Now all rich people seem to want to do is build pen!s rockets and collect politicians.

these small museums are weird, interesting, old fashioned and free.
Taleya@aussie.zone 1 week ago
big time. The wonderful victorian feel of the old museum was such a vibe

Bunch of oldies from the area were out strolling today through our court (it connects to the parklands behind our house). A group of them decided to walk down the street, despite there being a footpath. Fine whatever.
I was driving back from the shops not in a hurry, so let it go.
Then they decide to stop and have a chinwag at my driveway. I gave them a beep beep, they ignored me. So I pressed the horn pretty hard.
One of the old chaps walked to my car and told me I’m being a bit rude, I told him not to block driveways. He started carrying on so I just held the horn until he waddled off.
They don’t live on our court, so I’m not fussed, but fuck me, where is the decency.

Oldie here but well aware of traffic. I would be well out of the way in case the youngie decided to flatten me without even a beep beep.
MeanElevator@aussie.zone 1 week ago
I appreciate a lot of oldies. Hell, my mum is pushing 80 (lives overseas) and would never dare to do anything so brash.
Thank you for being aware and keeping safe.
StudChud@aussie.zone 1 week ago
Some oldies just don’t give a shit about anyone but themselves. There are always exceptions, but those dorks in your driveway are not that. Just twat behaviour shit.
Funnily, I had a similar experience when I went for a walk yesterday. On Sydney Road footpath, and idk I walk fast? So I tend to overtake window-shoppers/slow walkers where I can. Not in a rush, just walk fast 🤷♀️ overtook three oldies walking three abreast (so taking up the majority of the footpath), and I overtook them. Heard them talking shit “what’s her rush?” and “how impatient and disrespectful”. I just shot them a stink eye lol.
Should have mooned them to show what actual disrespect looks like lol
MeanElevator@aussie.zone 1 week ago
I give very little fucks, and entitled oldies will get a serve from me.
Had one try to cut in line at Woolies once saying ‘It will only be a moment’, i just said ‘No, you’ll wait your turn like everyone else’ and just ignored them after.
If they’re blocking an aisle with a trolley, the trolley gets moved.

I generated 4 x my pay in profit in 6 weeks for the company which employ me.
They didn’t say much because they know how much I leverage I have already.
So last night I got “food poisoning”.
Was nice to sleep in lol

Funny how we have to remind the places we work at about these sorts of details and they never bring it up for us themselves
Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone 1 week ago
If they did, they’d have to acknowledge that the effort/remuneration ratio is absolute bullshit.
Taleya@aussie.zone 1 week ago
I busted my arse end of year getting something in over the line. Talking 20 hour days by the end.
not even a thank you. So now they get what I feel like.
Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone 1 week ago
This is the way. No matter how “nicely” you are treated by your employer, they will remove you the moment you become an inconvenience.

I don’t generate income, but I fairly regularly have things on my desk worth double or triple my annual. It’s nice to pet the pretty things.

I’ve got a workshop to present at this conference and then I’m pretty much done for the week. Nice!

fuck me dead, bunnings are now running ads on their webpage.
sorry sponsored content
(look up “angle grinder”)
mertn22@aussie.zone 1 week ago
I think that Bunnings last week decided to use AI to help you shop. You may have run into that scourge.
RustyRaven@aussie.zone 1 week ago
I have wondered how much it would cost them if people started just chatting to their AI bot. Last week I engaged the Bunnings bot in a lengthy discussion on the merits of mulching the shelves in the lounge room (it wasn’t a fan of the idea initially, but I think I won it over).

So after doing it last year, I’m being asked to stay overnight at the kids’ band camp again this year. Only I was wrong a year ago: it was Sunday Night > Monday morning. As I predicted, I got insufficient sleep that night and went from the band camp straight to work the next day. It sucked.
I don’t especially want to do it, but I’m being guilted by the whole “Sadly, we won’t be able to proceed with the overnight stay if this spot remains empty” bit of the email. I’ll hold back a little and hope another dad steps up this year. And if I do end up caving, I’ll be taking that Monday off.

In that awkward situation where someone at work has been recommended to me as a connection on LinkedIn and they have the “Open to work” badge on their profile. I shouldn’t say anything to anyone but you know they’re looking to leave at some point
