Beethoven and Bach are waaaay overrepresented imo.
Redrum714@lemm.ee 11 months ago
I am extremely disappointed Kardi B is not on that list. They should have made a way to remotely update it.

“Hello from Earth! Now music from about 25% of the population and landmass.”
I get that Americans, myself included, Beethoven and Bach are important and influence, but if it’s trying to explain all of humanity, include more stuff from the nations of Africa, Asia, South America, and some stuff from the native people of Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the Americas.
It feels at best stupid to say “this details the best of humanity in a small package” and the best is mostly western.
I do love the “Hello from Earth” in several languages.

“Chuck Berry - Johnny B. Goode”
I really hope they includes Marty McFly’s famous quote:
I guess you guys aren’t ready for that yet. But your kids are going to love it.

I’ve often heard that there was a specially recorded song by The Carpenters (usually in the context of jokingly complaining “why The Carpenters? The aliens are going to think we suck”). But it’s not on the list. Is it an urban myth? Were they on a different spacecraft?
lanolinoil@lemmy.world 11 months ago
I loved how in Stellaris one of the first missions you can get to do is find and destroy voyager since it has too much information other civilizations can use to wipe us out.

I mean if there is alien life that has the ability to reach us, they are technically and socially so much more advanced than we are that we wouldn’t stand a chance or be able to hide either way. They’ll either come in peace and we live or they don’t and we die.
DragonTypeWyvern@literature.cafe 11 months ago
That is not a standard mission

Probably only if you play a human empire (and probably only the fascist one tbh)
AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 11 months ago
They don’t call them Voyager per se. You hunt down and grab “several unnamed probes” before other civilizations stumble on them.

I have to admit that I thought this was about Star Trek Voyager.

Same lmao

I was expecting it to say “Sir, I do not have the intellectual property rights to play this mixtape to the public.” The golden record is like MLK’s speeches - we know they’re epic, and we’re not allowed to listen to most of it/them without throwing some cash around.
theangryseal@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Wait, is that true?

Where on voyager is the record located?

I hope those micrometeors have been kind to it. Dont want them aliens to decode the disc as "Fuck you guys".
lustyargonian@lemm.ee 11 months ago
Lmao

There is an audio drama episode on The Truth in which the Voyager crashes on a planet in the back yard of the most milquetoast, generic, submissively mindless young couple. While they discuss what to do about it, it becomes clear that they live in a society of conditioned subservience a la Orwell and suburban HOAs.

I bought the replica box set and it’s really well put together!
Kolanaki@yiffit.net 11 months ago
They gotta figure out it works that way to begin with. IIRC, it comes with pictorial instructions but that may not be enough.
afraid_of_zombies@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Never forget that out first message to alien life was a naked selfie, a mix tape, and directions to our home.
ZeroCool@feddit.ch 11 months ago
lol damn… now that you mention it the scientists that worked on Voyager basically predicted internet dating culture in 2023.
Nudes, link to a Spotify playlist, and if all goes well, late night hookup directions.
afraid_of_zombies@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Maybe that is why they never come here. We sent out the equivalent of “hot girls in your area want to meet”
Aliens: agh, fishing scams

Imagine they get to earth, see everyone wearing cloths and are like “nah, wrong place”
