There’s a locked liquor cabinet at my local store. It’s at the back with the wines and cheeses.
Trying to find someone to open it for you is such a mission. And because it only boasts lower end spirits, you feel like such an fiend chasing down a store member who can radio the person with the key, who takes five mins to arrive, just for a bottle of low-mid tier whiskey.
There’s $10 sake in there. On the unlocked shelf next to it you could grab a $60 merlot.

No, it’s not. The decision on what they lock up is based solely on what’s most frequently stolen. Do you think store employees love having to come unlock the cabinet each time, and then feeling like you’re judging them for feeling judged by them for buying a bottle of low-mid tier whiskey?
I forgot people have a propensity to steal cheaper things more than expensive things.

Those magnetic peg locks are mostly old hat now. The modern wave of locking display cases at CVS and similar have glass doors with a standard cylinder lock which takes a standard key.

it’s what i bought so I can open shit at the store I work at. spider is the name brand of magnetic locks, but the same key works on every brand of magnetic lock I’ve tried.

I betcha those folks that took the Louvre aint waiting on no manager to unlock deodorant at CVS.
Genuine question, why don’t they put the beepy tag things that are on stuff like video games and pricier clothing? That’s what they do with stuff like fancy liquor where I’m at. I’ve never had to ask an employee to unlock a cabinet for me, not even for actual expensive stuff, like a laptop.
the beep tag doesn’t stop anything from going out the door, it just startles, confuses, and shames people who legitimately purchased something but are triggering the alarm with sensors that weren’t properly deactivated by the cashier
Yup, it’s the “annoying and invasive, but easily cracked DRM” of the retail world. It annoys legitimate customers, while doing very little to actually deter theft. Most of those beep tags can be quickly and easily removed with a strong magnet.
Diversity is how we solve this problem.
