It’s unfortunate, but it does help out in many cases. There are many people who if you give them lots of space while they are in the left lane they assume you don’t want to pass and just sit there, move closer to them and they will move over. It’s unfortunate that it is this way, but many people are like this. They don’t have any understanding that people behind them want to go past them unless the people behind them start driving closer to them.

Actually the sides of a car would be referred to as the driver and the passenger sides of the car, but if I said left and right side everyone would know what I was talking about.

If I turn my head around and look backwards the right and left side of my body don’t change. It’s always in relation to the front of me.
If I referred to something being on the right side or left side of my car, anyone would know which side I meant.
