If I had 1 billion, I would set up a fund of 990 million to advance my agenda of free software, citizen rights and clean energy. With 10 million my entire family and next generation can freeload, lol.
Relatable :(

Can we just discuss how the current billionaires are more interested in hurting people than enjoying life?
I ain’t saying that having a billion dollars is a bad thing, but I will say you can have a billion dollars and still be missing a piece
Or box of pieces

I ain’t saying that having a billion dollars is a bad thing
I am, though. It ABSOLUTELY is. That much wealth concentrated on one person is extremely toxic to the psyche of the person as well as detrimental to the function of society as a whole.
R3N5656@lemmy.world 20 hours ago
Absolutely! I detest the majority of rich folks who are for some reason desperate for more profit no matter who they hurt or how badly. Like do they not have enough private jets? Is the global environment not degrading fast enough for their taste?🤦🏻♀️
Personally though, 1 billion dollars is my only missing piece. Aside from that I’m perfect! (and super humble)
razen@lemmy.world 19 hours ago
I dont need 1 billion, just a few million dollar will be enough for my entire life.
Funkt4st1c@lemmy.world 18 hours ago
$10 million would let me freeload forever. $100 million would achieve most things i want. $1 billion would let me solve at least one national issue and also blow the rest on whatever the fuck i/my entire family could possibly want.
bss03@infosec.pub 19 hours ago
Yep, if I was given a billion dollars, I’d immediately start my work on making 990+ millionaires (or 1M$ donations to community service/support organizations).
lugal@sopuli.xyz 18 hours ago
True, sometimes we focus too much on the big things and forget to appreciate the small things in life. Thanks for reminding us to be humble
you_are_dust@lemmy.world 21 hours ago
A billion would be pretty excessive for me. My missing piece could be 1 million.
Tikiporch@lemmy.world 20 hours ago
Yeah, me too. I’ll settle for one measly million.
HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 17 hours ago
one million one dollars for me, bob
TrickDacy@lemmy.world 20 hours ago
A million would more than do it for me. No work ever again unless I wanted to.
bss03@infosec.pub 19 hours ago
That’s also my number. Anything over 1M$ should go out to supporting independent creators, mutual aid, or community-focused non-for-profit donations. Wish I had a job and was still making progress toward that number. :(

1 billion dollars is too much for one person.
endless_nameless@lemmy.world 16 hours ago
I don’t think a trillion dollars would help me at all. I’d rather be poor in a world worth living in than rich in this miserable world.
zikzak025@lemmy.world 16 hours ago
When you’re that rich, the world is what you want it to be.
apric0t@lemmy.world 16 hours ago
Not really, otherwise they wouldn’t be trying so hard to change it.

I could get my teeth fixed and visit the dermatologist!

That much money is a fucking hassle. Everyone wants it and bothers you about it. You can’t just leave it alone, it needs to be managed. Some portion of that money goes to pay for the management of it. And if anyone finds out you have that money, they treat you differently because generally, only shitheads and assholes have that much money. Money is fucking toxic and humanity is a giant disappointment
partial_accumen@lemmy.world 21 hours ago
And if anyone finds out you have that money, they treat you differently because generally
At $1B I’d assume the person and any close family members would be at risk of kidnapping/ransom. I would imagine billionaires all have to hire and pay for private security.
okwhateverdude@lemmy.world 21 hours ago
EXACTLY. What a pain in the dick. And of course, how do you evaluate if that private security is actually working? It is basically insurance that you hope pays out if something goes sideways.
cheese_greater@lemmy.world 22 hours ago
How would it be seriously if you just keep it in high-interest savings account or whatever that gives you like even 1-2% (around $10 million/year)
okwhateverdude@lemmy.world 22 hours ago
It depends on how much risk you want I guess. Amounts that big aren’t covered by deposit insurance in a single account. Banks also fuck up all the time. They could give someone else access to your money without you knowing. And if you have that much money, it makes you a target. There will be tax things you have to do around that money too.
CapuccinoCoretto@lemmy.world 18 hours ago
You would still be losing purchasing power due to inflation. At this scale it as long as you are not a greedy moneywhore investing it, or not would not impact a lavish and privileged lifestyle for a few generations.
If you wanted to keep your descendents wealthy for as long as possible, you park it all in a trust, have a family office manage it for you aiming for real returns of 3%, so roughly 5-6% nominal returns and descendents get whatever real returns acrue after inflation as income forever.
CapuccinoCoretto@lemmy.world 22 hours ago
A billion dollars? My life wouldn’t change one bit. My houses, my cars, vacations, my mistresses, etc, would.
lookitsjustin@lemmy.ca 16 hours ago
Even $10K would change my life.
Rhaedas@fedia.io 22 hours ago
Just a thousandth of that would be fine with me. At this point I just want comfort and security. I'm okay where I'm at, but another million as a buffer would remove any concerns at all.
Zwiebel@feddit.org 22 hours ago
Man I could buy all the snacks I want!
HuePony@lemmy.ml 19 hours ago
A million would be enough
MacaqueAndCheese@lemmy.ca 22 hours ago
One billion dollars can buy a fuck ton of beanie babies, hold onto them for 30 years and they would be worth millions of dollars!
