The Milky Way galaxy is estimated to have 400 billion stars.
Elon Musk would have enough money to give at least 2$ to each star system in the galaxy.
Fuck Elon Musk.
notabot@piefed.social 2 weeks ago
$2 to each star in the galaxy, and still have enough left over to be ludicrously rich, and have more than anyone could reasonably spend in multiple lifetimes.

“The” galaxy? Andromeda?
topherclay@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Imagine, you go to quit your job cuz you think our galaxy looks like a rug but your boss explains to you that that is a whole different galaxy and ours doesn’t look like that. You start crying and your boss says to you, “There there, don’t cry over spilled milk.”

Counter argument: the streets are full of homeless people doing exactly that. Look before you leap
Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 weeks ago
Homeless people are tying the universe together?
We should really be paying them for that.
And housing them, of course.

Counter-argument to the outer post, not to the inner one.
Skullgrid@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
kneejerk circlejerk contextless reaction.
You’re not wrong, but you are acting like an automaton.

I implore you to read about why people actually end up on the street and to remember it is always better to be silent and thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt
Skullgrid@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
really? what do you think happen to people that quit their jobs without preparation on impulse when their savings run out?
Follow up : do you thin telling people to be careful when making huge decisions like that is a bad thing to do?

Those yellow things are all stars? I thought they are more sparse
BluJay320@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 weeks ago
We’re looking at vast distances, and there’s no depth perception here. Like seeing constellations, those stars that look clustered up are actually much farther apart than you realize, but you can’t tell the distance just by looking at it
Siethron@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Also this view might include red dwarfs which make up like 75% of all stars and are not visible to the naked eye at night (and wouldn’t be even if you were in space on the dark side of the moon. they’re too dim compared to the sun). When you add them in galaxies are much more dense with stars.

It really tied the room together until some Chinaman peed on it.
Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 weeks ago
He peed on your galaxy?

Thus we are all dust mites on the bath mat of some colossal being, and one day we’ll be flushed out in their washing machine

Pretty sure that’s just an old linoleum tile or faux granite counter with reflections of the overhead light.

All these stars out there and we’ll never visit them; all this universe out there and we’ll never explore it
Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 weeks ago
Tbf, I’d much rather visit the planets and/or moons around the stars than going anywhere near the stars themselves 😛
Kefla@hexbear.net 2 weeks ago
I’ve just gotta assume there’s plenty of other sentient shit out there experiencing the wonders and horrors of the universe as well.

This looks a lot like a sky shot of a dense city at night.
New cyberpunk world-building technique just dropped
