Any game that innovates with gameplay/art style is an instant buy for me. Unfortunately I won’t be able to play it immediately as I’m a bit busy but I hope to give it a try soon.

By all respect without hating on it (love the game as it is), there is not much innovation in art style or gameplay here. From what I read in reviews the gameplay is oldschool standard shooter mechanics (which is good news to me!) and the art style is old and known, also used by other games before. What makes this game so special is how well it is executed and brought it into one coherent game.

I’ve been playing for about 45 minutes so far and it has met my expectations for sure. First game I’ve bought on day 1 in a long time. Reasonable price + original idea + good features + reasonable requirements are such a rarity nowadays except in indie titles. This game plays at 60 fps on medium (good graphics and rarely dipping below 53 fps) on my Steam Deck. It’s fluid and flows great. I am enjoying the gameplay a lot. Feels like a classic shooter on the level of classic Bioshock and Doom with a great art style and atmosphere.

My only complaint is the lack of ultra wide support. Steam guides recommended a third party app called Fullscreenizer which fixes it, but it makes my PC run incredibly hot. Dropping to lowest settings at 60 fps pushes my temps to the max in certain areas.

So cool. All the animations must have been so much work. Wishlisted!

Another one that might interest you, then.

what kind of rating is “everyone 10+”? if it’s 10+ it ain’t everyone.

That game could trigger some childhood trauma.

Great execution of an idea
Sadly it has the same problem as cuphead for me: I really really REALLY hate the old Disney animation style on a visceral level
sompreno@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago
Fair but cuphead isn’t really old Disney its more like loonytoons
jacksilver@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Disney is pretty well known for popularizing the rubber hose style animation that cup head uses as it’s inspiration. While Looney toons was around the same time period and had some elements, I don’t think it’s considered rubber hose style.
Krudler@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
The style is a huge red flag for me… I don’t think “woah cool rubber hose animation” I think “oh, another hyper-styled game with no actual game”. Negative reviews confirmed this fear.
EncryptKeeper@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
The reviews are overwhelmingly positive. Out of nearly 2,000 reviews less than 100 are negative at all.
Krudler@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
And?
The negative reviews confirmed my fears, it’s a shallow game covered in style.
Get comfortable with people not liking everything you automatically like, that’s how preferences work.

Style > “Realistic Graphics” If you’re judging a game on just graphical style you’re going to think a lot of gems are shit.

This is why you don’t deserve nice things

I saw this and immediately wishlisted it

Art style looks cool.
Requires Windows. My computer can’t run that (by choice, also by design — it’s a Mac). So that’s a red flag I can’t ignore.
Anyway, it feels like this game has been coming for years. It doesn’t help that it looks somewhat similar to that other retro cartoon bullet hell game I can’t recall the name of right now. That game doesn’t interest me though; this one tentatively does if it has an easy mode or the difficulty is fair.
Katana314@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Wait, what? The game is Steam Deck verified. How does it require Windows?
Nibodhika@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Because Steam only uses proton on Linux AFAIK, and the guy said he’s running Mac, so it it’s not native it’s not available to him.
dragontology@retrofed.com 3 weeks ago
I can run Steam Deck verified games on my Mac? How? (I don’t think I can, I think you just missed that I have a Mac, not a Steam Deck.)
I didn’t look for Steam Deck verification, I just looked at the OS flags above the price. They have them for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Having a lot of success on modern mac games with Sikarugir and wine. Might be worth a shot.

Cuphead
dragontology@retrofed.com 3 weeks ago
Yes, that’s the one. I love the look of both games, but I recognize that Cuphead is beyond my play ability. Gorgeous game though!

The fuck!? I thought this was a point and click game, or at best a turn-based combat game. It’s a boomer shooter!?
SOLD!!
bonenode@piefed.social 3 weeks ago
Thanks for your comment, I was about to scroll past but a shooter in this style is interesting for me!
Katana314@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Funny thing is, I knew a long time ago it was a boomer shooter. I was miffed that it boiled down “detective work” to gunning down whole rooms of people.
But, on a second look, I’m surprised to see there’s a lot of genuine worldbuilding, exploration, and conversations to go into the mystery! Sure, gunning down hordes is still used as the central play, but I like when it’s not overly reductive.
