I’d rather see them demanding that Israel joins the NPT, but they don’t want to legitimize the existence of a genocide state by asking it to do things.
The Iranians HAVE to realize that demanding the release of the unredacted Epstein files as a condition to re-open the strait of Hormuz is probably the strongest card they have right now...

The Biden administration had the Epstein files. If they contained damning evidence why would they not use the files against Trump after they lost the election?
And if the files are that damning to the Trmup admin what is stopping him from just keeping up dropping bombs?
Currently it’s a question on how much consessions Iran have to offer for US to stop bombing. Not what demands they can issue to not block the strait.

Because Democrats are complicit in everything that Republicans do. Democrats exist to create the appearance of opposition, while in reality both parties serve the interests of the wealthy. Uncovering the wealthy class’s depraved deeds does not serve those interests, which is why neither party really wants that.

We need to delineate here. It’s not all Democrats, it’s ones that are taking corporate, AIPAC and other dark money. Grassroots campaigns are the only successful way to get candidates that represent working class constituents because that’s where the money comes from. This all goes back to Citizen’s United, which was the largest attack on democracy in my lifetime.

Because it screws politicians on both sides.

Realistically Biden probably cared more about all the Israeli officials showing up in there and the appearance that Epstein was a Mossad asset than it being embarrassing for like the Clintons, etc.

Wasn’t this because:
- The investigation in to Maxwell was in process so it would hurt the case against her to release them?
- They were legally sealed until 2024?
FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 12 hours ago
Also, the Bush Admin gave Epstein a plea deal in 2008, but under Obama FBI investigations continued culminating in arrest of Epstein and Maxwell.

Because it’s damning for both parties.

Also, the attorney general isn’t supposed to be a lapdog for the president, they’re supposed to act autonomously to enforce checks and balances and… The law. I know, silly notion. This is a huge shift in corruption that sadly, the American people have come to accept due to propaganda and normalization. The files were sealed due to the Maxwell investigation by a federal judge, which is normal during an ongoing investigation. Then they were reopened by Congress during the Trump regime and the attorney general doesn’t follow the law and there’s no accountability due to the aforementioned efforts.
First_Thunder@lemmy.zip 14 hours ago
The question is also, why weren’t they deleted to in the first Trump admin

If Iranian elites aren’t in the Epstein files it is just because they had a better source fir it.
chaogomu@lemmy.world 9 hours ago
Better? I’m not sure you’d qualify that, but local, that I’m sure of.
karashta@piefed.social 13 hours ago
Because our entire government has been corrupted by the same capital class that are the Epstein class.
Klox@lemmy.world 15 hours ago
Strongest card to get nuked? Wut…
e8CArkcAuLE@piefed.social 12 hours ago
totally, they’d rather have the whole world burn than stop protecting their god-chosen elite
FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 12 hours ago
Honestly, I don’t think Iranian control of the strait in any capacity is going to be up for negotiation, so it would alread be a nonstarter before they made any demands.
They would have to demand release of the Epstein Files in return for withdrawing from the strait.

The Iranians essentially practicing piracy in the strait is unambiguously counter to international law (UNCLOS), and breaks one of the fundamental elements of how world diplomacy has worked in the modern world. What the Iranians are doing is in fact an act of war against all nations which ships the Iranian stop.
Countries like those in the EU are keeping a low profile right now, because Trump has made such a giant mess of the diplomacy. But long term, I can’t imagine they will let this fly.

Thanks I’ll be stealing this.
Beep@lemmus.org 13 hours ago
🥺 Will you at least mention me as the source?
Or will you do as me and steal without linking to the source?

Why? The files are meaningless at this point. Nobody was prosecuting trump or anyone else in the US over this.
I can’t stress enough how little the files matter to him. The only people constantly relating the files to this war are people on social media and a few offhand quips by public figures.
Trump is going after oil. Both Venezuela and Iran were attacked (depending on what minute you were listening as it changed a dozen times) ostensibly for regime change, but everyone knows that’s bullshit. He’s trying to control oil and energy prices. Multiple sources point this out, meanwhile the US press is saying shit like “Here’s what the Trump administration is doing to lower oil and gas prices. Is it working?” CBS news, “Trump’s unshackled presidency puts him at the center of the economy.” CNBC.
It’s another, giant grift attempt to put himself in charge so he can coerce and bully other countries to get what he wants.
stenAanden@feddit.dk 7 hours ago
It would be the ultimate PR soft power move.
RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 7 hours ago
What power is it over someone who is under no threat from it? I mean, if they actually did it and trump was immediately removed from power for it I’ll eat my hat, but from the look of things my hat is completely safe.
