    Some of my favorites:

  idk what OP means but dangerfield’s thing was generally making jokes about these kinds of jokes, he’s timeless and his acts are still funny today

  So weird how comedy can shift like this. It used to be like an eye roll laugh type thing but now every time I see or hear a joke formatted like this it immediately disgusts me.

    It’s supposed to be self-effacing. Dangerfield’s playing a character you’re supposed to recognize as an obnoxious, abrasive loser.

    It’s like watching Jon Arbuckle fuck up on a date or Al Bundy fail at business. You’re not supposed to be rooting for these guys, you’re supposed to be laughing at them.

    In the same way that Batman shifted from this 70s era Sci-fi Action Comedy to a 00s Grimdark thriller/horror, we’ve lost any sense of humility or self-deprecation. All these people lining up in excitement over a Joker that isn’t funny.

    all the great timeless comedians do one thing…they’re telling the truth.

    in the case of damgerfield, he’s playing a character. a abrasive, completely un-selfaware rich guy. a joke about hitting his wife is a really a joke about the kind of losers that hit their wives.
