Just wanted to acknowledge the people here who have complicated relationships with their mothers, have lost children, whose mothers have passed, and any expectant mothers, single dads, foster carers or pet owners ❤️❤️

I dont really speak to my mother anymore. tonight, for the first time in several decades, I got a little baked, chilled by the fire and then decided not to worry about Mothers Day at all…

Kudos to those few companies who admit it it’s problematic and send opt out links!
hitmyspot@aussie.zone 1 year ago
Yes, I’ve started to get a few. It’s a nice gesture.

hugs
all festive days are just another opportunity for people to show how they truly are so I just celebrate with my true loved ones or on my own
melbourne_wanderer@aussie.zone 1 year ago
I love my mum, a lot, but whenever we soend time together, something builds up between us until she explodes in a tirade of telling me all the things about me that she dislikes. Could take months, could take years. After hearing it all enough times, I finally decided it’s easier to just to remove the problem of spending time together to free her up to spend it with people whose company she actually enjoys. Much better for my mental/emotional health.
Thanks for the hugs :)

Happy Mother’s Day

The other day, a neighbour posted that they were selling their coffee table, and it came with a free cat bed, as her cat has never used it.
I don’t want or care for glass coffee tables, but I asked if I could buy the cat bed - she said it was free and she’d leave it outside her apartment for me!
I grabbed it, thanked her, and gave it to Mickey a few days ago. The top can come off so I detached it and put treats in there for him over the last few days.
Last night, he slept in it!

Last time I rented a property the condition report was a carbon copy checklist of a couple of pages, with a few lines to add comments. This time I have 170 pages, with multiple photos of everything. There are 9 photos of the front door knob.
Catfish@aussie.zone 1 year ago
That is insane. I think our last one was 16 pages. It was all online because Covid, pity anyone with a data limit.
Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone 1 year ago
This is a really, really old house.
Every single scuff mark was documented. I moved in 3 years ago and the report was 95 pages.
Moving out is going to suck lol
RustyRaven@aussie.zone 1 year ago
This is a brand new house, there is not really anything to document. There are pages of everything being perfect in great detail.
Basically any damage is going to be on me. There are little pots of all the paint colours though so I can do touchups, and spare tiles and floor boards so any damage to those can be fixed without redoing everything too. Hopefully I can avoid any damage though - I have lots of things like shelf liners and caps to go on all the furniture to stop scratches. Plus many door mats and rugs.

I did it. I put away the clothes. And threw out/ added to donate pile a bunch of old stuff. And vacuumed. Gonna make a gin, have an everything shower and pop a one pot spag Bol in the instant pot.

I found one of my friends from the park face down next to his car yesterday. I think the old block had just tripped and no longer had the fitness to get himself back up. Helped him up and got him into his car. Helped pack away his fly fishing stuff that he practices with. He said he was okay from there but I reckon I should’ve drove him home. I was on the dog walk so finished that then went back to the park to check on him and the car was gone ~40 minutes later.
Bottom_racer@aussie.zone 1 year ago
don’t let your fitness slide
Ooh I’m witnessing this first hand right now too and it’s very true.
melbaboutown@aussie.zone 1 year ago
That’s been on my mind lately 😬
Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone 1 year ago
This is why I’ve stuck to the 4 days a week gym routine and eating clean as I moved out of my mid 30’s.
Been a real godsend.

Weird neighbours aside it’s been a nice day. I spent it cleaning and hanging out with fur daughter. m.youtube.com/watch?v=ofjtX6NT-hY&pp=0gcJCdgAo7Vq…
She didn’t get me flowers or make breakfast but that’s because she’s not allowed near my credit card and can’t reach the stove.

she’s awesome 🐱

Back in melbs.
Hit pot hole on way back, tyre fucked, spent 2hrs in a BP car park (admittedly with a nice view of the you yangs and a jackas) waiting for dude to fix.
7/10. Was actually quite lovely out there.

It’s a nice coincidence that YarraByte chose a lotus for today’s emoji as tomorrow is Vesak Day!
Today I’m taking it fairly easy. My biggest task is to make this delicious prawn curry (incl shallow frying the heads first for extra flavour). One of the few recipes that DON’T use tomato - I’m sick of it being in every other curry recipe out there. Beans, eggplant, gourds, greens, all with tomato! It’s not necessary! Have some balance.
Btw - they gave me the prawns in a big ziplock bag type thing, instead of wrapped up. Is this new? The ziploc didn’t close very well and I nearly dropped one of my items into a pile of prawns during checkout.
imoldgreeeg@aussie.zone 1 year ago
Vesak day - is that the same as Buddha Jayanti? Either way 🪷🙏🏻
Seagoon_@aussie.zone 1 year ago
tonight I am making a mango curry that has no tomato
also, TIL about Vesak Day
melbourne_wanderer@aussie.zone 1 year ago
I too have just learnt about vesak day. V interesting!
just_kitten@aussie.zone 1 year ago
Vesak Day is probably the only real day of significance all Buddhists observe worldwide, there probably would’ve been more events on today if it wasn’t for Mother’s Day overlapping (and it’s not a “festive day” per se…)
Tomato is totally overkill with mango. Too much acidity. I’m adding some tamarind to the prawns and no tomato in my dal or beans. I was rummaging through my freezer meals last night and highly annoyed that most things had tomato in them

Who’d Ike to help me set a bonfire? Yeah, no hallmark holiday here thanks.

mother’s day dinner for MIL done , present well appreciated. Got her a fancy throw rug and cushion for when she’s sitting watching telly.
and Young Miss Seagoon has invited me to stay with her at Hobbiton, I mean that village near by in NZ. 🧝which is cool

I found some of my old sketchbooks from my early twenties… there’s not much there but it seems like I was actually fairly good back then before really learning anything.
I often just copied pictures I liked without knowing how to sketch but it was very detailed and somehow I copied hands (???). But now there’s resources available I’ve completely got the chokes.
Wish I could get that ability back

Anyone else notice the price of fuel since the Election?
It was about $1.70/l before the Coalition announced their 12 month excise discount of 25c. Then overnight fuel went up to $2/l.
Now that the Coalition has well-and-truely lost, fuel is back down to $1.60/l.
dumblederp@aussie.zone 1 year ago
I think it’s just the usual cycle with a bit of low oil barrel price in there.
Salvo@aussie.zone 1 year ago
I think you might be right, especially with school holidays, but oil barrel prices are influenced by politics.

Is that an iPad? If so do you mind me asking which one? I want to buy one for reading journal papers and writing and tooling around with digital sketching and some photo editing. But I keep getting stuck on a cheaper gen 10 or the more expensive newer air so I can get the pro pen.
If this not an iPad just ignore my ranting I’ll go back in my cave 😂
calhoon2005@aussie.zone 1 year ago
It’s not an iPad, it’s a few generations old galaxy tab.

Miss Meow definitely likes the new mat I put in her carrier, she keeps napping in there. She’s in there now snoring away.
just_kitten@aussie.zone 1 year ago
It doesn’t look like much what with all the prawn heads and pandan leaves etc (and my total lack of making it look nice) but HOLY SHIT is this a mind-blowing prawn curry. Even frying the heads in oil at the start smelt divine. I confess it might’ve worked better with lime rather than tamarind but it’s still so deep in flavours! I also went ham on the chilli (Kashmiri chilli powder, black pepper, and a couple of v spicy dried chillies). Can’t wait to taste what it will be like TOMORROW, my god…
prawnvaganza
Deveining the prawns is a bitch though… the tract keeps snapping and then I can’t pull a segment out. I’ll need to improve my technique.
That was several hours worth of cooking between that, the cluster beans, and the ginormous pot of dal with cluster beans. But now I’m set for quite a few days. And thanks to my handy dishwasher I can now relax for the rest of the evening. Yay!
TheWitchofThornbury@aussie.zone 1 year ago
The heads and shells are too damn good to just throw away. Best risotto I ever made was with yabbies - boiled up the heads and shells with aromatics to make the stock. Gamechanger. Whenever I get prawns I mostly boil up the heads for stock and freeze it. Does magical things to any rice dish as rich in umami from the tomally in the heads.
just_kitten@aussie.zone 1 year ago
I do love just sucking on the heads when I’ve had whole prawns. I think if I make another prawn dish without the heads I’ll be making stock and freezing as well, it’s entirely worth it. Or just use the stock directly (I’m thinking of a nice saucy risoni dish maybe).
