There’s an ebike expo on this weekend at the Brunswick Velodrome. I’ve seen internet in ebikes in these threads so I thought I’d share:

Is that velodrome still the worst bit of bitumen to ride on ever? Or has it been re-sealed in the past few years?

      source
      • Thornburywitch@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨year⁩ ago

It’s concrete, not bitumen. If you are talking about the velodrome down near Merri Creek, that is.

Needed a change of scenery with doing work (going a bit troppo doing WFH all the time) so brought my laptop to a local cafe. This place is more a coffee and small eats place rather than a full-on brunch place, so thought it would be fine.

It’s interesting how working / studying from cafes in Australia isn’t really a thing. I get why (table turnover). I remember when I was in the US it was very common to walk into a cafe and see most people with laptops. Didn’t seem to be an issue in Japan either.

eh? heaps of people work/study from cafes here, just not when/where it’s really busy, which is as it should be.

Really? I don’t see it all that often, except maybe in the CBD (Starbucks etc).

Thanks sea. Sorry for not posting the dibs thread, somehow I managed to fall asleep at 8:30, the earliest I’ve slept in quite a while for not much apparent reason 🙄

Bandcamp Fridays always creep up on me and I don’t know who to support.

Maybe I’d use bandcamp more if it didn’t suck to use so much. Then I’d have a ready mental list of albums to buy

Apropos of nothing: I like watching YT horror shorts, good and bad. Seeing what film students and enthusiasts create is rewarding to me.

I watched a bunch of them yesterday, new ones and ones I’ve seen already. However, I watched a 30min one I hadn’t seen or heard of (somehow), called “The Strange Thing About the Johnsons”.

Now this is on me, I should have checked who made it and maybe read the comments beforehand - but I went in blind.

    spoilers and content warning

Ari Aster (Hereditary and Midsommar) made it when he was in AFI film school… 10/10 will never watch again. If you do want to go ahead and watch it, here are my TW: SA. It’s not shown explicitly, but the whole fucking thing is just acted to perfection, the directing, the cinematography, it’s an exceptional piece of art, and touches on subjects that should be discussed more. Apparently, this short was what got him attention and he went on to do the other, more well known, films. But seriously, I cannot stop thinking about it, because it was so well done, so beautifully and realistically acted, that I feel sick and will never watch it again.

Another short I love is The Other Side of the Box - I think it’s 15 minutes and I 100% reccomend it to anyone who is interested in horror. It’s just such a perfect little film.

These are my favourite type of horror and also looking forward to Zone of Interest, will start streaming next week (or now if you have VPN)

My kid (teenager) likes horrors, so I’ve been watching with him. IT, Halloween, Get Out, etc, I’m all good, not too scary, I can handle this horror stuff.

Went in blind to Hereditary, and that was, erm, eye-opening. Also watched Midsommer, but didn’t find that as bad. Thanks for the heads-ups on the Ari shorts, don’t think I’ll be going there, lol

I find myself in need of a ring spacer thingy. A $0.70 Temu order sounds like a terrible idea. One of the only physical places that seems to have them is Dick Smith? Colour me confused.

    source
    • Thornburywitch@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨year⁩ ago

What is a ring spacer? Is it for adjusting the size of a ring, or a ring shaped object for spacing other objects? Directions unclear.

      source
      • Catfish@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨year⁩ ago

A ring Re-sizer. Little plastic/silicone gizmo for when your ring is too big and permanent fixes are not appropriate.
