I knew a guy like this. He said he didn’t like sunflower seeds for the same reason he didn’t like shrimp. “Too crunchy”. Apparently he was eating the shell and all of both of these things…

Crunchy!

Okay but a properly fried shrimp is peak with the shell on. Good snappy crunch to it, they help hold the flavor in, wonderful. And for tails I usually don’t even care how they’re cooked I just go ahead and eat the tails shell in saves a lot of hassle and they’re pretty good

Depends on the shrimp.

For most of my life I willingly ate them shell and all

At least you didn’t know that wasn’t the social norm. Eating sunflower seeds whole is like swallowing splinters and causes constipation. As for shrimp, it’s just an unpleasant chew as far as I’m concerned.

But that’s how you eat sunflower seeds. You don’t chew or swallow the shell, but you put it in your mouth and crack it with your teeth.
BeUnique@lemmy.zip 15 hours ago
Nah I confirmed. He was just tossing them in his mouth and eating them whole. This is how the conversation came to be in the first place. He was a work friend and I offered him some sunflower seeds and he said “nah man too crunchy” and that unravelled the whole thing. He was a pretty sheltered guy, eating mostly processed garbage and nobody cooked in his house growing up. He was a nice guy just pretty oblivious at times. I once got him to eat one of those Airborne capsules you put in water and drink as a chewable.

Sometimes I intentionally eat the shells as well. So tasty and crunchy
BeUnique@lemmy.zip 15 hours ago
Yeah, til you have to shit them out the next day.

I had that experience with Lychees. Nobody told me you weren’t supposed to eat the crunchy center!

I had the opposite experience eating pomegranate the first time. So fucking delicious, but the pips were an unsettling crunch/texture that I couldn’t get over. However, it’s too much work to remove them from the pips, so no fresh pomegranate for me.

The way I eat pomegranate is like popcorn meets sunflower seeds.
Take a few of the pearls, pop them in my mouth, break the water balloon with gentle chewing that doesn’t break the seed, suck out the juice, spit the seed.
Pom is a flavored water fruit rather than a chew and swallow fruit. You don’t miss much leaving the pulp behind (and I’m not talking about the white rind) because theres not much of it to begin with. Its ideal for brainless time like watching movies. The prep is pretty easy, too, since the pearls tend to fall off pretty easily into a bowl, perfect for mindless snacking.

Its not bad once you realize the structure of the pomegranate. It also helps if you leave it in the refrigerator.

I’d love advice for being able to enjoy a pomegranate. Does the pulp peel off the pip better if it’s cold?
Cethin@lemmy.zip 14 hours ago
You can always collect the juice, or just buy it. Pomegranate is great, but it’s mostly just juice with seeds. Orange is very different than orange juice, for example, but pomegranate isn’t.
