I’m in that ballpark (ok a bit over).
I’m in that vicinity (ok a bit last) and I think it kinda depends on what you’re doing. Talking to anyone about the latest meme/influencer BS will quickly make my head want to explode, but then again so does taking to prior my own age or older who engage in social-media-spawned politics.
But I also host people in the teens to early 20’s, and I absolutely love engaging with them in activities. Suddenly, those sites you’ve already seen a hundred times and stopped noticing become kinda new again.
It kinda goes the other way around too. There are many things I do that may beyond the means of younger people, especially stuff that involves technology which has massively jumped in cost these last few years (thanks AI tech-bros) but I’d already had before. They get to enjoy some of the stuff I like without having to front the cost-of-entry, and I get to enjoy sharing. Heck, even stuff like certain repairs/renos/shop-work can be interesting to somebody whose never had the opportunity to go hands-on.
I might not have the energy to do all the late night social stuff that somebody half my age does, but I do have the resources and energy-drinks to host a periodic late-night movie-watch, LAN-gaming session, aurora-hunting, how-to-do-X or various other stuff that we can all enjoy.
I think the biggest hurdle these days is allowing people across ages to find mentors without running into (or seeming like) creeps.

Ah yes. Getting a PC that breaks into the game market has always been a bit more pricey - though the Deck helped that - but these days the component cost is just insane.
- Comment on PS5 console sales drop 30% in April after price increase, while Switch 2 dominates 4 weeks ago:
Depends on what you play on PC. A lot of AAA decent releases are, but there’s stuff regularly on sale and it’s pretty easy to accumulate a backlog just from sales of good games.
There’s also reasonably priced releases like Silksong but that’s more rare

Not sure about these days - other than 7-11 the typical “corner store” seems to be getting increasingly rare - but when I was younger most were generally run by people that I assume were immigrants due to having some accent or other.
- Comment on Some things were better in the good old days 2 months ago:
Yeah this is a huge thing with vehicles. I like my Japanese cars and typically have had either Toyota or Honda. Neither was problem-free by any stretch, but at the same time the ENGINES tended to be very reliable with routine maintenance (belt/oil/etc changes) and the other stuff parts were always available and generally not too expensive.
My car’s did spend a decent amount of time in the shop, but at 360,000km the engine in my old Camry was still running like a champ even if it burned a little bit of oil and certain parts of the body were becoming more bondo than metal. When small things failed, I’d grab a new one from the hardware store or in some cases the wrecker. I was - with assistance - able to do basic general repairs like belts, brakes, and a clutch in my relatives’ garage. We did fuck up the timing slightly once but the engine just stalled out without any permanent damage (whew). I’ll also add that a lot of people who drove the more “efficient” foreign cars tended to treat them nicely whereas versus domestics or sporty vehicles. The mindset of the owner matters too.
These days… fuck. I can’t even easily change the stereo out on my current car - and that’s now over a decade old - because it’s tied into the side/rear camera system, front display, and a bunch of other shit. I think there’s like one head unit that will still handle that stuff but it’s hard to get and even then there’s no guarantee. Domestic stuff is even worse, with certain trucks unable to source key parts within months of the warranty ending. There’s one model where the ECU failed regularly and the supply of replacements dried up, others in shortages due to “supply chain” issues etc, and a whole run of GMC vehicles from between '21 and '24 with connecting rod issues (6.2L v8) that have a major backlog in parts even for in-warranty repairs.
My wife’s car… well it’s an EV which - while it’s great not to be buying gas at these prices, the company absolutely is not building these to be convenient to service, and we’re lucky if the local dealer could do the more complex stuff it battery work much less a 3rd party mechanic (or me). I’m actually looking at some of the Chinese models which can have safer batteries that are built to be more easily swapped out, and China being what it is somebody will probably be able to make replacement parts for decades.

I haven’t watched STSF yet but yeah there’s ton of stuff in Trek that would quality as “woke” right back to ToS, as well as a bunch of stuff that “broke” from an intellectual level.
I think my biggest issue with Picard is the latter… with the “fireworks in space” celebration (complete with sound of course) just making me want to bury my head in my hands.
It’s never been perfect, but it’s still entertaining.

What do you mean, isn’t possible?
There are plenty of subtitle formats that come as a separate file rather than burned or embedded into the video. If whatever software they were using for broadcast selected the wrong sub it’s quite possible, though obviously the timing wouldn’t sync up.
SOP isn’t that far off from TEL so the possibility of selecting the wrong sub file seems to have decent potential

Indeed, and now what GoG is pursuing stronger Linux offerings I may shop there more, but Valve had contributed more than just a shop and launcher. The Linux work with Steam Deck and Proton has been invaluable.
- Comment on Tips 4 months ago:
I mean, I do get it. Some people take on debt as a way to live beyond their means when they could still live a “comfortable” life without the glamour or “keeping up with the Jones”. The $80k+ gas guzzling truck bought on credit - that’s only used for driving to work and grocery trips - is a good example of this.
But a better way of saying this is “live within your means”, but it’s becoming increasingly impossible to do this and have a standard of living that’s just “decent shelter and healthy food” (or even, “enough food”) which should be a bare minimum

Google based Android off Linux. Apple based IOS off BSD. Both of those were the result of collaborative work between thousands of millions of contributors.
Frameworks exist that assist in making apps for either or both, just like they exist to build games for multiple consoles etc.
Meanwhile, Google has now declared that they will require developers register signing key WITH THEM in order to make software that will run on Android (regardless of whether it’s installed via their store or another) and has been taking steps away from providing the the necessary codebase under AOSP etc that allow for third-party projects that were based on Android
Google has also transitioned readily to “rent” based services such as YouTube while killing off Google Play Music etc (such actually allowed purchases/downloads of media). Both companies are already heavily investing in generative AI.
Do you think that once they have control of all app signing they’ll allow apps that circumvent their advertising or data-harvesting?
This doesn’t “make sense”, it makes us pay more to a digital landlord who throws around their weight to lock us in further and further while using their increasing wealth to buy up or crush all the competition. We’re accepting chains of convenience today in trade for restrictions and exploitation tomorrow.
I can think of one company that holds a dominating market position and has been somewhat benevolent, and that’s Valve. They don’t buy out competition, they’ve been active contributors to open-source (to the extent that they’ve made gaming on Linux actually viable and good), and they often seem listen to their customers in order to improve. They still do take a goodly % of sales revenue from developers who list with them though.

- Comment on Is there a practical reason data centers have to sprawl outward instead of upward? 6 months ago:
How many high-rise libraries do you see? Weight is absolutely a factor in data center design, as is airflow/heat
- Comment on Is there a practical reason data centers have to sprawl outward instead of upward? 6 months ago:
You joke, but heat does rise and a tall building would need to make extra concessions for cooling concerns, while also dealing with the issues if weight. Large racks of servers are actually quite heavy, which is why many datacenters in i.e Toronto were built in an ex parking garage
