- Comment on Capitalism isn't the problem, THIS is the problem, and I've watched it roll over us for 40 years. [3 min. video] 3 days ago:
Google based Android off Linux. Apple based IOS off BSD. Both of those were the result of collaborative work between thousands of millions of contributors.
Frameworks exist that assist in making apps for either or both, just like they exist to build games for multiple consoles etc.
Meanwhile, Google has now declared that they will require developers register signing key WITH THEM in order to make software that will run on Android (regardless of whether it’s installed via their store or another) and has been taking steps away from providing the the necessary codebase under AOSP etc that allow for third-party projects that were based on Android
Google has also transitioned readily to “rent” based services such as YouTube while killing off Google Play Music etc (such actually allowed purchases/downloads of media). Both companies are already heavily investing in generative AI.
Do you think that once they have control of all app signing they’ll allow apps that circumvent their advertising or data-harvesting?
This doesn’t “make sense”, it makes us pay more to a digital landlord who throws around their weight to lock us in further and further while using their increasing wealth to buy up or crush all the competition. We’re accepting chains of convenience today in trade for restrictions and exploitation tomorrow.
I can think of one company that holds a dominating market position and has been somewhat benevolent, and that’s Valve. They don’t buy out competition, they’ve been active contributors to open-source (to the extent that they’ve made gaming on Linux actually viable and good), and they often seem listen to their customers in order to improve. They still do take a goodly % of sales revenue from developers who list with them though.

- Comment on Is there a practical reason data centers have to sprawl outward instead of upward? 3 weeks ago:
How many high-rise libraries do you see? Weight is absolutely a factor in data center design, as is airflow/heat
- Comment on Is there a practical reason data centers have to sprawl outward instead of upward? 3 weeks ago:
You joke, but heat does rise and a tall building would need to make extra concessions for cooling concerns, while also dealing with the issues if weight. Large racks of servers are actually quite heavy, which is why many datacenters in i.e Toronto were built in an ex parking garage

I’ve been keeping some money set aside for a newer VR system, specifically one that supports wireless connection to PC. Was considering one of the newer HTC models but Linux support seemed… spotty. In glad I waited and have already wishlisted the Frame

- Comment on Nearly 90% of Windows Games now run on Linux, latest data shows — as Windows 10 dies, gaming on Linux is more viable than ever 1 month ago:
I previously played with just Steam and there’s basically one setting to enable - allowing the install of non-native games - and then (for supported games) it’s pretty much the same as Windows. In some cases you need to select the Proton version but generally using “latest” does the trick. There are games that require Proton-GE to work. These were essentially ones where Valve’s Proton version doesn’t have workarounds for various DRM etc (likely because doing so would get them in trouble). On Steam Deck this is done by pretty much going into the local Appstore in “desktop mode” to install. Other distros may vary.
For non-Steam games it’s a bit more of a pain, and can vary widely by game. I’ve installed a ton either just by running the Windows installer from Wine or scripts provided by Lutris.
Honestly if you’ve got the cash and want to try things, grab a Deck and give that a shot. If it works for you, take the leap to Linux on PC. Alternatively on PC, add/resize a disk and go dual-boot. The guided installers on Ubuntu variants generally make this pretty easy.

- Comment on Who's your favorite female protagonist in a video game? (Add pic of character in response) 2 months ago:
I kinda feel like Terra developed a bit more over the course of the game, from orphan half-fey under the control of the empire to joining a rebel group while finding herself and discovering her past. In the end she doesn’t get assigned a “love interest” and become mother to a bunch of war-orphans as she gets in touch with her humanity.
Celes comes in a bit more badass to start - as a super-soldier-serum (magic infused) general who turned against the same immoral empire - but a lot of her side story aside from the island is a bit… weird what with the whole Locke Ultros opera thing. It’s like the story writers couldn’t decide whether she was a superhero or damsel in distress.
Locke’s own backstory with the Phoenix quest is neat though.

Most have Eurocentric accents because those are the areas the various legends and stories originated.
Various depictions of leprechauns make them pretty much Irish rednecks. I love Mad Sweeney’s depiction in American Gods.

Except that rising interest has also fucked up the market for builders who are now producing even less houses
- Comment on Don't forget to tip 2 years ago:
There are three reasons that “good landlords” seem to be scarce:
-
People tend to be more vocal about bad experiences than good, so we’ll definitely hear more about the bad ones
-
Many people decided to become a landlord because it outpaced other “investments” greatly, especially if you’re a shitty landlord who doesn’t put profit back into maintaining said “investment”
-
Many of the good landlords that did exist and weren’t gouging eventually got hit with a bad tenant that cost them a lot of suffering and $$$ while being extremely difficult to evict. Whether it’s true or not, I still hear current ones who say they’re charging [crazy amount] to pad for the eventual $20k bill when a bad tenant wrecks their place (and these days it’s not hard to do $20k+ in damage)
Also per the comic: I’ve never heard of anyone tipping a landlord, good or bad

Yeah, I get that Bedrock is for consoles, but as far as far as “performance” that’s mostly a front-end consideration.
I just wish that there was a level of compatibility where one could still self-host and allow the console etc players to join

That’s a great explanation of the terms. Thanks for that.
Given this, can you think of a word that would describe those who are hostile to the concept of a deity? Antitheist, perhaps?
- Comment on How is woke a religion? 2 years ago:
Yeah, I don’t find any religion I’ve ever run across appealing, but I have no beef with those who do good under the umbrella of their religion and don’t try to beat on others with it.
- Comment on How is woke a religion? 2 years ago:
And? You could take the same data and say- “religious persons are less likely to speak out againstmessaging that potentially promotes harm” (likely also dependent on the religious affiliation of the messenger)
The preceding message that this makes atheists the more “intolerant” group is a pretty massive reach, consider that the messaging they may be against could in itself be one of intolerance as per my example.
- Comment on How is woke a religion? 2 years ago:
Also, what is the relation of “a speaker” to religion? If somebody comes in to speak and starts talking about how we need to gas more jews, stop women from voting, and put the blacks back out in the cotton fields then fuck yeah I’m gonna support cutting them off and sending them packing.
- Comment on PSA: If you still have a Mojang account for Minecraft: Java Edition, you have less than a week left to migrate to a Microsoft account to avoid profile deletion 2 years ago:
What’s getting destroyed? You wouldn’t be able to login to the server but the data would still be there. Transfer the account (or make a new one) and the data’s still there as well.
I’m more annoyed that Microsoft split off Java Edition and Bedrock into two pieces of incompatible software, but I’m honestly surprised they’ve supported the old auth services for this long.
