This made me realize that it would be really hard to distinguish between a satirical NDT quote and something I have earnestly and profoundly thought to myself while 2 edibles into a nature documentary. And I’m not sure how to feel about that.

Or just set a rule that you use the same ball the entire match. Balls wears out? Tough titties… improvise, adapt, and overcome.
- Comment on Four minutes of air conditioning 1 week ago:
An electric fan uses around 50 watt-hours of electricity per hour.
On one level, I do understand why the author wrote it this way, but man the way popular media complicates things by using units like “watt-hours per hour” (i.e., just plain old watts…) rankles me.
Just give the power consumption (watts or kilowatts) and then if appropriate relate that to the (kilo)watt-hour unit that we see on our power bill.
- Comment on When did it become normalized to start passing credit card processing fees to the customer? 2 weeks ago:
Good question. I believe the card companies used to have language in their agreements stating that vendors were not allowed to specifically charge fees for card usage. So you used to occasionally see places offering a discount for cash like you said.
But I have been seeing more and more places outright stating a card fee, so I wonder if those agreements have changed in the last several years.
Not sure where you are located, but A quick search says that there are some US states with laws banning card surcharges, but most allow them.
Unfortunately, you know those fees were baked into pricing structures long ago, so any place charging an extra fee for card usage is definitely double-dipping.

If those icons reacted to taps and swipes like actual fluffy fabric, I’d move heaven and earth to install it on my phone.
Reminds me of the style of the recent Kirby games.

Honestly, I don’t think your edit is crazy at all. I have a hunch that all the fake, filtered, AI-processed, vtuber’d social media is going to result in a sharp backlash soon. Kind of like how over-the-top, image-focused glam and heavy metal of the 80s spawned a backlash in the rawer, more “real” feel of grunge and stripped down alt-rock in the 90s.
Maybe that desire for reality will be one of the triggers for the AI bubble bursting.

I mean “friend-shaped but we without friend personalty” is inherently terrifying whether its dogs or people.
But you do have a point that scary robot animals tend to be dogs, not cats.

Calculus is a tool used in science, absolutely. But calculus itself is not science, in the same way that a chisel is not woodworking.

I wasn’t even thinking about thunderstorms, but you’re right, I would totally miss them! My dogs hate them, but I love a good rumbly light show on a hot summer night, and the cool air that (usually) follows.

Maybe controversial, but despite the rye chips being far and away my favorite part of Gardettos, I actually prefer the mix because then the rye chips are that much tastier when you hit one.
Or maybe its the same kind of illness/cope that causes me to say things like “I actually enjoy living in the midwest, where we get to experience all 4 seasons, versus someplace that’s pleasant and warm all year”

As a pretzel M&M lover, I hate both that they are relatively rare and that the caramel ones have such a close color.
I used to get a tinge of excitement when I saw a blue bag of M&Ms, followed by disappointment at realizing it wasn’t the pretzel ones. Now I just get immediate anticipatory disappointment, and, rarely, a nice surprise.

Get a library card! My local small town library has access to a surprising number of nearby libraries, and if I’m willing to wait a week or two for the item to be available and get transferred, I’ve been able to get some decently non-mainstream stuff for free. For more obscure stuff, bandcamp is pretty awesome.

Yeah, its their online-only bank.
I have no idea why some banks can offer those CD-like rates while others offer virtually zero. Capital One 360 Savings and Ally have similar rates as well.

One that earns you more than the default 0.15% or so that you earn on most savings accounts.
You have to do a bit of hunting, but for example, I have an account with Citizens Access that earns 3.50% last time I checked. It’s not much, but it’s better than earning nothing on the emergency fund that I want to keep liquid and accessible.
- Comment on My credit union no longer allows me to payoff pending purchases made on my credit card 5 months ago:
Easy peasy. Instead of making payments to your credit card, transfer the amount to a high yield savings account instead. Then use that savings account to pay your CC once per month. (Savings accounts typically have a limit on debits, but you can usually make as many deposits as you want.)
Enjoy the cashback AND a few bucks in interest AND having your checking account accurately reflect your “real” money at all times.

That’s why I specifically called out the phrase “free speech absolutist”.
In my experience the vast majority of people who truly do advocate for freedom of speech are willing/able to understand nuances such as the fact that your freedom of speech does not grant you immunity from the social consequences of unpopular speech. I.e., other people exercising their freedom to disagree or opt not to use their private platform to host your speech. The “absolutists” will unironically call that censorship, rather than recognize other people are not compelled to engage with their speech.
