You clicked “shutdown and install updates” instead of “shutdown” didn’t you?
I have to give a presentation in 15 minutes

sometimes you don’t have an option. it forces you to install updates

Years back when I used windows the ‘shutdown’ and ‘shutdown and update’ acted the fucking same most of the time. Shit was driving me up the fucking wall.
Honytawk@discuss.tchncs.de 7 hours ago
Sure you didn’t wait too long before updating so they had to force those updates?
They force them because too many users skipped them and started to complain when things went wrong because of it.

When you alt+f4 then enter, that is the default option if update is available. Makes sense when OP accidentally pressing it, i know i did it a lot of time. Sometime update upon starting is fast, but i guess OP had one of those update.

So, how did it go?
Fuckswearwords@lemmy.world 2 hours ago
Lol I just got home. The update (25h2) finished 55 minutes after I posted this. Which obviously coincided with the moment I finished my presentation. I used my boss’s laptop to connect to the beamer & give the presentation.

Don’t worry, your data is where you left it.

Why would you … use windows?
Cheese_man@lemmy.world 10 hours ago
Probably OP’s work computer. Most people don’t get to choose.

Part of the time for money exchange program is using the computer that they give you…

The amount of misinformation in a windows update thread on lemmy would be laughable if it wasn’t a weekly post.
Brkdncr@lemmy.world 8 hours ago
Why would you not defer updates if you need to use your pc?
scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 8 hours ago
Putting aside that windows will simply forget updates when it decides to, users should not have to beg their own pc to not do something they didn’t choose to do.
Brkdncr@lemmy.world 8 hours ago
You’re wrong twice in one sentence. Windows gives you lots of opportunities to deal with updating on your own schedule. Updates shouldn’t be optional, else we have huge botnets running around.

This sounds like bait on lemmy

Lemmy/Reddit, Linux/Windows… Many of us are forced to use Windows on corporate hardware.
victorz@lemmy.world 6 hours ago
Did you press update? I bet you pressed update.
adarza@lemmy.ca 5 hours ago
it’s the sneaky ‘update and …’ options that get added to the poweroff submenu that often get in the way to produce unexpected ‘updates’ during a boot.
victorz@lemmy.world 5 hours ago
So they passed that, did they?
HubertManne@piefed.social 8 hours ago
Yup. Work to get it perfect the day before. Then you make it a point to get a good nights sleep and be really ready. I have been here.

Recent Windows update caused secure boot issues on my kid’s laptop, wouldt get past BIOS without some fiddling.
Why does Windows suck so badly?
charmed_electron@programming.dev 8 hours ago
The way my org does it, I get a pop up saying my computer will be forcibly restarted when the countdown reaches zero. It’s typically an 8 hour timer. And the dialog can’t be minimized. If you move it, it moves back to the lower right every minute or so.
