  If only large numbers of workers could get together, maybe even unify, to set a price for their labor. Some kind of labor union type thing.

    Nah, the only “labour union” that’s allowed to make demands of their employers are currently the ones responsible for beating the shit out of and arresting people in labour unions.

    There’s a reason they militarized the police across America, and it wasn’t to stop petty crime.

      I took a wrong turn today on my way to a job interview, and when I went to turn around I came across one of the spots where the local sheriff department hid one of their giant military vehicles because when they had them all in one place it was attracting a lot of negative attention and newspaper articles. They technically never said they got rid of them, but most people assumed they did

      But I know where one is now and it doesn’t have any cameras pointing at it. It’d be a shame if someone cut their valve stems, wedged sharp pipe segments under the wheels, and started a fire underneath it.

  Don’t forget that equifax is now generating employee scores so employers can figure out who is the most desperate and will take the lowest pay, on top of who will actually be a good employee

  Profit = revenue - expenses

  If you want to maximize profit, you have to increase revenue and decrease expenses; that means raising the price of your product and/or service while also cutting your production costs. Labor is often the single largest production cost, so reducing labor costs is often one of the most effective ways to cut business expenses.

  It isn’t fair, it’s capitalism. This is how capitalism works. The profits of a relative few - specifically the business owners, investors and executives - are the priority. All of us are expected to prioritize THEIR profit above all other considerations, even our own lives and well being.

  Less-skilled labor is flat, more-skilled labor is up. The K-shaped economy. Nearly everything is completely different depending on which group you are talking about

  Have you tried ordering an hour of labor from any company? Those have gone up as well.

  Have you tried paying an employee an hour of labor as a company? Paying an hour of labor has also gone up significantly.

    Yeah, if you want to hire temporary workers it costs like £30 per hour but they get £10, all these very necessary middlemen

      When is you how direct, it costs 100k to how an employee you pay 66k/hr.

      You need to pay half of the social security, half of the unemployment, and in California, its 18k/yr for medical, (36k if he has a family), payroll tax, and that is if you provide zero retirement benefits.

  An hour of labor definitely went up in price, it just doesn’t show on the paycheck side. Unless you look at the withholdings, some of it’s there.

  I realized a while ago that I can’t afford to hire myself.

    I heard that phrase when I was young, about people in some poor place making shoes. They can’t afford what they make. I can’t afford myself either and never had at any point in my career, but this seems like a thing of capitalism.

  Depends on whether that hour of labor is going to a company that then pays a fraction of the fee to the employee or not. If so, the employee makes the same and the company increased the price.

    There’s nothing that you can explain with that fact. Inflation is a measure of dollar value in relation to goods… including goods that you don’t actually need. Simply knowing that wages outpaced inflation tells you nothing about the economic conditions of individual people.
