  Comments help too since a lot of PlayStation partners have contracts for showing off their games and some didn’t even know about Sony’s plan to cut physical media, making them lose out on a lot of money if all people do is roast Sony in the comments of their trailers and such. The public image of Sony tanked a lot and their partners are feeling the consequences of it too

    Isn’t Sony’s anti consumer stance it the whole reason Square Enix went multi platform? Why would a company shoot itself in the foot like that.

And the physical discs aren’t the problem. People billing it down to that means the problem won’t get solved. Might as well tell Sony they don’t care about the real issue. Since PS4/XB1, games have basically required Internet to play. If the game is delisted, it still won’t play even if you have the disc. Delisting is the real problem. Stopping sales of the game isn’t fine, but it’s forgivable. But let people who own it play it in perpetuity. Or refund their money.

    Yeah, I mean that was the generation where games really started to require Internet and/or Day One updates to play. Before that, online was really optional.
    
    Sure, some newer games are fully contained on the disc and 1.0 is playable offline, but from then, more and more weren’t.

  Agreed. The issue isn’t physical discs or cartridges or whatever… it’s how games work now at a fundamental level…
  
  Here’s my solution proposal :
  
  Make it illegal for a company owning an IP to do any action that hampers product functionality of any kind, even if “ceasing” action causes a hamper to that functionality.
  
  The only CAVEAT that should be allowed is a game having a MODE that the company supports in which they provide an “official” e-sports competition circuit server you can connect to if you want to compete in an official capacity.
  
  They should be able to sell you the game, and if it is centered around multi-player gameplay, it should work at a basic level with open community-hosted networked gaming support.
  
  Any company that owns a game should be required to submit a source code version of it to the government to act as a “patent” to the game’s source code and copyright. No submission? No valid piracy case can be pursued.
  
  Owner company goes out of business?
  
  Company loses game patent / copyright and the game’s source becomes publicly freely available.
  
  New company buys the IP and fails to support all functionality originally in the game from the original owner company?
  
  Game code is publicly released and you lose the ability to pursue piracy cases.

  If you don’t do something this comprehensive, the real problem is - what if a company goes out of business or sells to some other entity?
  
  Corporations do this already in many industries in order to shirk responsibilities to repair issues or do recalls of broken products.
  
  They do it with digital movies, they do it with John Deere hardware, they’ll do it with anything they are not fully required to do that they can weasel out of… so make the barrier to entry to even have ACCESS to the consumer market such that even doing nothing means the company risks losing ownership and enforceable copyright.

  The other important thing to me is that anyone who’s actually okay with digital-only doesn’t care about the disc thing. This generation, many people bought consoles that can’t insert a disc (I’ll admit, I own an Xbox Series S). That’s a LOT of customers.
  
  All of them want to believe they’ll have access to their games 5 or 10 years later. So, it’s important for the societal response to aim to protect them too.

    I have an XSX, but I hate changing discs. I wish they’d just implement that feature where as long as no other Xbox user has inserted your disc, you have a revocable digital entitlement to play without the disc.

  Selling or moving a game to another account should also be possible digitally and this could be extended to cover PCs, leading to more consumer freedom for everyone.

the ‘stop killing games movement’ is more important in my opinion than the physical drive issue. you can have the game dvd and not be able to play it if there are no more servers, or the studio simply shuts down the game.

  They are very closely linked, though. You are not incorrect, but the vast majority of games shipped on disc can be played without servers, etc. Once they take those physical discs away, the only way to get them will be digital distribution, which is way more prone to being shut down than every disc in existence being destroyed.

Nice, keep it up!

It’s clear Sony’s not changing course, but probably still good in general if the industry keeps hearing that physical media is important to people.

Better than writing angry comments is to buy physical over digital, if any of it. Don’t give a cent to their online storefronts if you don’t like that becoming the future.

Do the physical discs now even contain/play full games? I haven’t owned a console since PS3, but I was under the impression most made you download the full game even with the disc

  The majority of games released on disc, even today, are playable by putting them into a console, installing, and playing. No internet, no downloads.
  
  There may be debate about “full games” given day one patches and future content updates, etc, but it is a misconception bordering on misinformation campaign that games these days don’t ship on disc.
  
  They do. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, for example, has so much game shipped on disc that it came with two.
  
  You can check out http://doesitplay.org to see what games do (the vast majority) and don’t play from disc.

  There’s been a trend of “full games” not being printed on disc these days when they’re printed on disc (see for example DOOM The Dark Ages or even Halo I think?). Ie. mandatory day 1 patches that are required to play the game in the first place which without an internet connection you won’t be able to access. It used to be that you’d have a full gold master on the disc and could play fully install the game offline and play it with no issues. However, that requires additional time and resources poured into it - it’s easier to release an unfinished product and add to it after release than have it fully finished in the first place.
  
  I can’t find a pic of the label on the box that says “Internet required”, but it’s been used more often these days:
