You’re the reason Trump was elected again. Fuck all the way off.

I forget where I heard / read this but weren’t the founders dead set against the economic system we now find ourselves in?

America is pretty much a game of twisting the ideas the nation was founded on into the opposite of what they were intended to mean. Much like American Christianity. It’s a batshit country.
Adam Smith didn’t want unchecked capitalism; he argued that capitalists would immediately conspire to fuck everyone over when given the chance. Somewhere else he used the invisible hand as part of a metaphor for how specialization and trade between nations causes mutual benefits. The american political thought propaganda department took these two words out of context and made Smith the hero of unregulated capitalism, because the “invisible hand” of the market will solve everything.
It’s the same thing over and over. Jesus said love thy neighbour, American Christians are chanting build a wall. America was founded in direct opposition to kings, the current president is bragging about being one while hiring judges as hitmen who insist on taking the text of the constitution Very Seriously.
All of American society is a distorted lie at this point. All of it.

I agree in spirit. But:
Much like American Christianity.
Bad analogy. Christianity is terrible all the way through. The bible exists to normalize abuse. There is no world where “all-powerful and loving being chose to make us suffer” makes sense.
Jesus said love thy neighbour, American Christians are chanting build a wall.
He was talking to those who would inherit his kingdom. He was more dismissive of others. “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”
The golden rule predates christianity. There is no such thing as a christ, Jesus was a delusional narcissist who caused endless problems for us.
It makes the author a hypocrite, but it does not invalidate the idea.
To prevent such hypocrisy in the future, we cannot pretend false things are true. “Freedom of religion” makes accountability impossible. Grown-ass adults need to stop pretending magic is real. I don’t think baseless religious claims should be protected under the first amendment, it is akin to yelling “fire” in a crowded theater when there is no fire.
We can’t get on the same page when people are encouraged to believe whatever they want. Honest people believe what is most likely true whether they want it or not. We need to rely on standards that are grounded in observable, measurable reality.

They should claim to be liberals. Capitalism is a statement that Marx invented because he knew it was a losing battle to be against the freedom of classical liberalism. Since them capitalism has been made useful in economics in the same way spherical cows are useful in physics. However capitalism as most countries practice it is a result of liberalism not a goal in itself.
Triumph@fedia.io 2 days ago
Just because Marx gave a name to "an ownership class that undercompensates labor and pockets the spoils" doesn't mean that condition didn't or doesn't exist.
bluGill@fedia.io 2 days ago
Marx is one of a long string of 'experts' that don't value work that isn't obviously the result of working with hands. Mind work is very important
Juice@midwest.social 2 days ago
Marx did not invent the term “Capitalism.” It did originate with critics like Proudhon, who Marx was also critical of.
Is “liberalism” the primacy of private property relations in society? Many progressive liberals would disagree with you, while many Marxists would agree with you

And Republicans used to be neocons, not literal fascists.
Malyca@lemmy.zip 2 days ago
They’ve always been this, just going mask off now
lettruthout@lemmy.world 2 days ago
And they think that’s going to help them get elected?
Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 2 days ago
They only care about making sure no one to their left gets elected.
IronBird@lemmy.world 2 days ago
eh, they don’t even really care about that. they say what they think will get them reelected, if progs get a controlling majority of the Dem party most of these valueless centrists will flip

Only if Millennials and Gen Z still won’t show up to vote en masse. The tide finally seems to be turning against the old guard at least.
I_Has_A_Hat@lemmy.world 2 days ago
Damn, do you just never pay attention to history? Millennials might start voting more, but Gen Z and younger will not. Why?
Because young people don’t vote. Every fucking election people smoke pure hopium and say “This is the year! The youth are fired up! They’re going to turn out in record numbers and bring about change!” And every fucking election it is the lowest voting demographic, by a HUGE margin.
Young people don’t vote. I do not fucking care what the circumstances are and what you are seeing from online discorce. Young people do not vote.
And if you are holding out for the aging Millennials starting to go to the polls, well expect to keep holding that weight for a long time. Older millennials are beginning to drift more conservative. “How can that be?!” You ask. “Certainly they have been noticing all the stuff going on!” And to that I say; no, they absolutely are not. They are raising families. They are focused on their careers as they start to move into middle/upper management. They are getting dumber just as all generations do once they pass ~40. And conservatism attracts dumb people like flies to a honey-covered statue of a sexy fly.
The more things change, the more things stay the same.
