- Comment on Flip to Channel 62: UHF gets 4K release for 35th anniversary 2 weeks ago:
Yes, after many years of VHF (Very High Frequency) use for television broadcasting, technology and regulatory changes allowed new channels in this different part of the spectrum. Wikipedia has a good overview…
“Early receivers were generally less efficient at UHF band reception, and the signals are also subject to more environmental interference.[1] Additionally, the signals are less susceptible to diffraction effects, which can improve reception at long range.[2] UHF generally had less clear signals, and for some markets, became the home of smaller broadcasters who were not willing to bid on the more coveted VHF allocations.”
Older folks here on Lemmy might remember that not all TV sets in use could receive UHF channels. The sets that could were finicky - you’d have to turn the little dial just to the right spot, and have the antenna pointing in just the right direction, for the channel to come in. But after a few minutes you could still be looking at “snow”.
Yet it was worth it because the smaller-scaled channels had some interesting programming!

Is the term UHF unfamiliar to young people?
- Comment on New Scam: Asking to download Signal/Telegram? 4 weeks ago:
Just guessing that this is to get the conversation off of Indeed, for whatever that is worth.
BTW: I use Signal to stay in touch with my far-away family. It’s pretty nice. Rumor has it that it was originally built by the CIA (the US spy organization).

“Halved, the nymphs reveal a surprisingly meaty, white interior. After eating one that was simply blanched, I thought it resembled what a tofu-filled M&M might taste like, with its crisp shell giving way to a spongy, earthy interior.”

So the big (table) version would have something to attract the cat. Maybe a bell and a treat dispenser? Fun idea!

At least they should offer a clear plastic bubble - the head could come up, the eyes could see, but the paws stay off the table.

And even if they were, what harm did this cause while working for NASA?
- Comment on [deleted] 2 months ago:
Yeah the Wikipedia article states that, but their sources don’t check out. 'Any further documentation on this?
- Comment on [deleted] 2 months ago:
Did those scientists have much choice about joining the Nazi party? And, once in the US, didn’t some of them contribute significantly to the NASA space program? Why the hate then?

No idea about your evaporation question, but I’ve had success at removing lime deposits by using baking soda. It takes a little patience and scrubbing, but does work.

- Comment on The World Hasn’t Seen Cicadas Like This Since 1803 3 months ago:
“the dual emergence would most likely result in more than one trillion cicadas appearing in the roughly 16-state area where the two broods are generally seen…
To put that into perspective, one trillion cicadas, each of which are just over an inch long, would cover 15,782,828 miles if they were laid end-to-end.
“That cicada train would reach to the moon and back 33 times,” he said.
One of the more exciting aspects of this dual emergence, Dr. Shockley said, lies in the possibility of interbreeding along the narrow band in northern Illinois where the two broods will overlap.”

What type of product were you trying to buy? I had trouble like this when ordering borate wood preservative. Maybe six sellers cancelled my order. Not all replied to my messages asking for more info. Those that did vaguely referred to shipping problems. Eventually I gave up on eBay and got the item from an online store. HTH.
- Comment on How do I create a post with a link AND a picture 7 months ago:
OK, I see. The workaround is to create a post using the link to the image, then include the link to the actual article in the body. Got it.
- Comment on How do I create a post with a link AND a picture 7 months ago:
OK, that makes sense. Just did some tests.
It worked with an ABC News link, but not with an Axios link. Also: It doesn’t look like the thumbnail is visible when creating a post (after entering the article link).
My posts would look better on a feed if I could also choose a thumbnail. But I still like Lemmy.

Hmm… Is that what was done here:
I’m not seeing a link in the body, but what’s the section above the body? That seems to have a link.

- Comment on I believe science but I don't understand science. Does that make me religious? 7 months ago:
Let’s be more exact. There’s the scientific process and then there’s the result of science.
The scientific process encourages further study and research. It’s based upon facts. Our view of the world changes with more discoveries. That’s what you believe in, right?
The result of science is immense. You might study one part but have no exposure/interest in another part. Because you accept the scientific process, you can accept the results in other areas without it being a religion.
Contrast that with religion: it doesn’t tolerate questions because it has no factual answers. The process is to just blindly accept whatever the holy person/scripture says. We can see around us now how well that is going.
