Literally just did this tonight. My gf wanted a button maker, so we bought a 40$ one on Amazon. Opened it up. Looked at it, packed it back up and did a return to buy a 70$ model.
Yeah I see you...

Golf was $100 a round then it turned 4k into new clubs. I wish $500 is where it stopped

Ouch! Hey

This is why I try to stick with “hobbies” that only use things I already have access to, like pencils & paper, computer & internet, the outdoors, my own body, etc
Ansis100@lemmy.world 16 hours ago
Before you know it, you’re buying fancy pencils & paper from some specific town in Japan that has been making them for 500 years. Your computer is getting too weak for your hobby so you need to upgrade. The outdoors are nice… But they’d be even nicer in those new Mammut boots and Arcteryx shell.
And body? Well, eventually you’ll start buying sports medicine because of these stupid bodies being single-use only.
(I’m joking, of course, that is a great approach)

You joke but I do look at the fancy stuff from time to time… So it’s not like my approach is immune to the corrupting influences of consumerism 🙈 haha

Alternatively realize that the local library probanly has that niche equipment lying somewhere and you can borrow it for a month + 3 extension months twice a year.
