    Paper Wasps ✔️ Yellowjackets ❌

A paper wasp keeps trying to make a nest in my doorway and we look at each other every time I open the door. Since they’re not aggressive they don’t do anything unless you actively are messing with them (and sometimes even then they don’t attack!)

Anyways, it flies away and I remove the beginnings of the nest every time. Then it comes back overnight and makes another one in the exact same spot. It’s a little game I play with the wasp at this point

Paper wasps are such bros! A month or two ago I stuck my hand into one of their nests inadvertantly, was greeted with what felt like electrical shocks, and my hand didn’t swell or even hurt after a minute or two.

I will always come to paper wasps’, or wasps in general, defense. I’m sure yellow jackets play an important ecological niche too, but I haven’t run into 'em enough to have an opinion on their temperament.

Yellow jackets aren’t aggressive, they’re just annoying because they like the same foods we do, and are super persistent about it.

Wasps are great and I love them. They’re very pretty and tbh I have to imagine most people getting stung by them are complaining about a skill issue.

About a month ago a bunch of wasps built a nest right next to my gate where I leave and enter my yard every single day. Most of the time they completely ignore me. Every now and again one jumps off the nest and comes to investigate me. And then because I’m not an asshole and don’t strike first, it’s also not an asshole and returns to the nest after a couple seconds.

Leave them alone and they leave you alone, true of like 99% of the shit that’s on this planet.

No, time to kill them until they evolve a sense of personal space. A few flew too close while I was swiping, so I actually hit them with a broom.

Psh. We all know that clegs are the true scum of nature. Wasps are the dude bros of the bee worth. Like a midlife crisis lemon yellow race car that constantly gets into trouble as if they were born to recieve a Darwin award. They get drunk on fermented fruit, they constantly go out of their way to get into people’s homes and even build their hives in or on human homes if they can get away with it.

I have lost count of the times I have tried to help a wasp out of my house and they seem to actively avoid any openings to freedom and actively choose to give themselves CTE against the window glass.

I don’t like them. I will never like them, but I don’t hate them like how I hate clegs. Now there is a mistake of nature that I refuse to argue for, even if they are pOLLenaToRs too. Go fuck yourself, clegs. Wasps are cooler than your because they have color and speed and mosquitos are smarter than you because when they suck the blood of their victims, at least they are trying to be discreet about you. You’re the reason why horses and cows had to elongate their spine to make it a whip so they can flog themselves to keep loser bugs like you off their skin. You’re so bad at sucking blood discreetly that thick skinned animals had to evolve to slap you off them. What a failure you are, cleg. I hope you all go extinct.

Idk if it’s a species difference, but European yellow jacket wasps are pretty fucking chill. I’ve only been or seen someone get stung if they accidentally squish/step on them.

On the other hand they’re soooo persistent about stealing my food and bait. Like no, you can’t steal meat from my fork, fuck off. gets slapped, and comes back with 5 more sisters to bully me out of my lunch. It’s especially bad in late summer and so we have to eat indoors because of them.

Hornets can go fuck themselves though and I try to kill them on sight if they’re around the house.

I randomly got stung by a wasp whilst walking to work one day 🤷‍♂️ (back before I discovered that I was too disabled to hold down a job safely).

Bee sting because they’re protecting themselve or the colony, wasp sting because they’re assholes

  • Coleslaw4145@lemmy.world ⁨2⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

You can avoid wasp stings in the exact same way as bee stings; not being a fucking idiot

That goes both ways. Wasps like to fuck around and find out.

Yeah, one came into my house the other day. Big mistake. Buddy got split in half by my bug a salt.

I appreciate what wasps do for the environment, but I’m fairly sure that I’m genuinely somewhat phobic of them, presumably stemming from getting stung by one when I was like 3 or 4. It’s become more manageable to an extent as I’ve gotten older, but to this day, seeing or especially hearing a wasp nearby still stirs a bit of fight-or-flight reflex in me.

I don’t go out of my way to kill them unless they’re actively nesting on my house or something, but I do wish them a very “go do your thing, just far away from me personally.”

    dolphin good, shark bad

Be careful! Sharks bite! Here’s some wild footage of the apex predator biting someone. (Content warning: cuteness overload. Discretion is advised.)

That actually would have been bad if it was an adult shark. They were acting aggressive, and he just kind of sat there.

It would but since it’s a baby it’s like the marine equivalent of a baby jaguar or lion doing their best to look “I is fiewce! I bites!”.

I was stung like 4 months ago by one while riding a motorbike. In the neck. It left a damn scar. For nearly a month I looked like I had a hickey.

One time in my freshman year of highschool I was biking to school at the start of the school year. I drove past a dense line of trees and AT LEAST 3 wasps all latched onto my leg closest to the trees and tried repeatedly stinging me. Luckily I was wearing thick enough pants that they couldn’t get through. Texas wasps are fucked.

I’m pretty sure humans have liked bees and disliked wasps for a lot longer than most of us even knew there were sharks or dolphins.
