*Only six that we know of. Also 6 sounds like a lowball number, given the fact there are cultures that are known to consume unconventional animals as delicacies. And the bored rich who will dish out ungodly amount of money for stupid shit, just for the sake of exclusivity.

I can’t imagine it’s considered unconventional in places where monkeys are prevalent. Perhaps in city’s and such but rural folks with access to a large population likely wouldn’t give a rats ass what people outside their communities expect

You got me in the first half, ngl
But either way, comparing absolute numbers can be misleading. How many monkeys live on this planet and how many bananas? Think about it.

That’s a good point! I also want to know how they calculated that humans ate only 6 monkeys in 2025…
This is deeper than it might seem!

I think someone pulled those numbers out of a dark orifice. 74 million bananas seems laughably low. A quick research yielded about 9*10^11 (nine hundred billion) bananas being consumed world wide per year. I got that number by dividing the 109 million tons of bananas that were consumed world wide in 2022[1] with the 120g average weight of a banana[2].
I don’t think it’s possible to get reliable numbers for monkeys consumed as bush meat. However, in 2012 there was an estimate of 3000 gorillas being killed as food each year in Cameroon alone[3]. So it’s probably safe to assume that the number for monkeys is much higher.

I bet we ate more than 6 though.
Jiggle_Physics@quokk.au 5 hours ago
yeah, maybe 6 endangered great apes that are highly watched
Monkeys? I bet AT LEAST millions, they are common bushmeat.

Yeah. There are places where monkey meat is common. Some places eat the brains, too.

That’s a lot of radiation that humans collectively ate

No way, every human eats like 3 monkeys while they’re asleep at night. The monkeys are chasing the spiders that we eat.
