I dont know if i’d expect any white people to speak Welsh either 😆
People assume I can't speak Welsh because I'm not white

I mean, sure, but I think it’s understandable that they assume that. Not many white Welsh people speak welsh, let alone POC. Surely you can just speak Welsh at them and surprise and delight them?

I feel like this attitude is bigoted in more than one way:
- it’s anti-POC for obvious reasons
- it’s anti-Welsh because it implicitly assumes nobody who isn’t ethnically Welsh would have a reason to learn the language (because it’s dying or whatever).

Is it bigoted to think: no people assume you don’t speak welsh because why the fuck would you?

Well, living in Wales is the traditional reason

Letting people assume your linguistic skills is a superpower.

Doesn’t seem like an unreasonable assumption, Wales is mostly white and almost all white outside of Cardiff, Swansea, and maybe Newport and Wrexham. And I have heard they only push it in schools to the west of Caerdiff

I mean most white people can’t speak Welsh.

Actress Mali Ann Rees said inclusivity was key to encouraging more people to speak Welsh, with “no excuse” for unconscious bias.
There’s a huge irony here for me. I called out such unconscious bias once, which was actually perpetrated by a black Welsh speaker against an Asian from South Wales. She called me a racist for calling her out! And Reddit being Reddit, she was then upvoted and I down
I won’t forget that. It still intensely annoys me. So thanks Mali for taking my side here.

Was that to do with them being Asian or being from South Wales?
AnnieByniaeth@feddit.uk 5 weeks ago
That doesn’t make a huge amount of difference, especially with young people. One would never assume that a young person from south Wales doesn’t speak Welsh. They quite likely do.

People assume I have listened to Nirvana because I wear their t-shirts. Mad, innit?
prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 month ago
Is being brown the same as wearing a band t shirt? What a stupid analogy
mannycalavera@feddit.uk 1 month ago
Serious question. Why was the first thought that came to your mind “Gee I think that person is being serious what a stupid analogy let me tell them”. Like, why does your mind go there?

People assume I can’t speak Chinese because I’m a white American. They are correct.
sepiroth154@feddit.nl 1 month ago
Invalid comparison. It would be more like you being born and raised in China and people defaulting to English all the time.
Alk@sh.itjust.works 1 month ago
It was a joke, not a real comparison. I just happen to not be able to speak any other language.
