Disclaimer: I’m not making fun of queer people, I’m making fun of the acronym.
I'll be honest that while I get that everybody wants representation, making the abbreviation so unwieldy is ruining the whole point of the abbreviation.
Personally I'm sticking with LGBT+, as it is easily memorable and effectively conveys the sentiment, even if it doesn't catch everybody.

Honestly? Thanks for the disclaimer. Was really unsure how to feel about it at first. However… I agree. Want representation for everyone but the acronym does seem to change pretty frequently yet always leaves someone out somehow. I’ve honestly given up trying to keep track and just call everyone who isn’t straight and cis part of the “Rainbow Spectrum” or the “Rainbow Coalition”. I personally live on the corner of Magenta and Pink.

if the ‘+’ includes every not mentioned gender/sexuality anyways, why can’t we just say ‘L+’?

IT folks solved this ages ago.

“The Gays™” generally gets the point across.

Because then it doesn’t feel like equal representation for everyone. It feels like Lesbians are getting the most representation with everyone being an after thought. While lesbians are awesome, it does feel shitty for everyone else. That’s why so many additions have been made. It doesn’t feel representative of everyone or equal. Also why I throw the whole thing out and just call us all something else. No one gets specific representation but it goes back to the original meaning of the Pride flag. Every color in equal representation, showing the diversity of us all and how we all deserve to be seen and heard.

Because L+ is the only streaming service I’d pay for
Seriously though the history of lgbt as an acronym comes down to the fact that it began with gay men and lesbians organizing separately and bi and trans people being part of those organizations, but bisexual and trans groups began differentiating and separately organizing while we all began realizing we needed to work together more in order to actually change things.

This is why I’ve always preferred the term GSRM: Gender, Sexual, and Romantic Minorities. It’s fully inclusive without ballooning out to an absurd size. I see no signs that it will see common use in the near future though.

Ironically I remember it being just GSM. I see where the R comes from though

I’ve also heard this used as a pejorative but I really like the term, “alphabet mafia”
Stamets@startrek.website 1 year ago
I do like it because there is some reclaiming and also some jokes but know who else I’ve heard referred to as the Alphabet Mafia? The Law Enforcement agencies of the United States
Kolanaki@yiffit.net 1 year ago
Alphabet Mafia sounds like it could be a bit from Sesame Street where some wise guys teach you how to read.
Bloodwoodsrisen@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 year ago
I tend to use “The Alphabet Mafia” when referring to everyone under the LGBT+ acronym

Honest question:
Is it bad that I would prefer to call them either Human, a person or by their name?
IMO referring someone by their sexuality or their preferred gender is akin to calling someone by their skin color or ethnic origin. Eg. Referring to someone as "My friend" in comparison to calling them: "My Mexican friend" or "My Black friend" or "My LGBTQ+ friend".
