I asked a researcher on mastodon working at the Amundsen-Scott Station last year about how they manage navigation there and they have their own grid system over there, aligned with the prime meridian.

So they dont use polar coordinates? That’s a shame
bryndos@fedia.io 22 hours ago
Don't tell me this is an opportunity to apply polar coordinates - that'd be far too much of a coincidence.
Fortunately down there they should be safe from any polar bearings.

You sleigh me, but this is snow joking matter.

Why does this picture of Australia have North written all over it?
supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 1 day ago
I propose Antartica adopt an irrational approach.
Decide on Antartica North as a basis, clearly this should be Antartica’s tentacle where it reaches out trying to touch the South American tentacle.
Multiply North by the square root of -1 a.k.a. i.
I propose as international law that real estate/territory claims all have to be solely defined in terms of trignometric functions on Antartica.
It would also hopefully draw irrationality from different continents acting as an irrationality sink.

… It’s free

But we were only supposed to have three estates!

Better check my compass…
Treczoks@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Just go north, and you’ll get to the coast.
JoShmoe@ani.social 1 day ago
You can’t have two places named north. Computers can’t handle shit like that.
abbadon420@sh.itjust.works 1 day ago
They also said computers can’t handle dates beyond 1999.
JoShmoe@ani.social 1 day ago
They were right about that btw. If a fix wasn’t rolled out, we’d probably be living in a different world right now.
daggermoon@lemmy.world 19 hours ago
I wanna live there

To be fair, you can move in any compass direction from any point on Antarctica - except for the south pole
HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 20 hours ago
I feel like east and west are more pertinent directions
dangrousperson@feddit.org 12 hours ago
the joke is that all lines of longitude meet at the poles. So everything is north of the south pole. There doesn’t exist a east, west, or south of the south pole

I’m a big fan of The North East ;)

North-Antartica is doughnut shaped
