Some civilized countries have a process whereby partial rent can be legally withheld/deducted, incentivising them to fix it quickly. Less civilized countries require you to engage a lawyer and risk having your rental contract terminated unilaterally.
Infuriating update to the broken lift plea. Signatures were added two days ago. And now someone has added a note.

Racist countries (like Britain can very much be unfortunately) also don’t give a shit what a building full of immigrants want.

In my state (tenant laws are good here) we could withhold rent (ideally in a seperate bank account) until key things are fixed like an elevator.
Get a lawyer and organize rent withholding for the entire building. That’ll get them to fix the elevator right quick.

Second year in a row when farting during Holy month that we will be climbing this mountain! This is slow poisoning!!
Wat?

“Fasting.” Blackburn is a city that is 30% Muslim and this building is far more than 30% Muslim based on who I’ve seen in it. They’re complaining that they’re making people, including the elderly, climb up multiple flights of stairs while they fast. And I sympathize despite being an atheist with no Muslims in my family.

Fasting (for Ramadan)
Not sure about "slow poisoning"
FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 month ago
I think it was some poorly-worded hyperbole. A lot of the people here are not native English speakers, so I’m guessing they were trying to poetically say “you’re killing us!”

That’s what I got as well. I had so many questions.

Man I once had that happen and I’m wheelchair bound. I had to move apartments after I realised how unresponsive they are to lift problems. When the lift breaks, it means I have to sleep on a friends couch!
FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 month ago
That’s horrible! I’m so sorry to hear that! I feel bad enough for the elderly women I see going up the stairs, but at least they can get to their flat!
Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 1 month ago
Our apartment is in a building on a rise/hill. There’s an elevator to take us up one floor from the street level lobby and 2 floors from the garage/basement/laundry. But at the other end of the building, there’s an exit directly to the street, because of the hill. So when the elevator is broken it’s an inconvenience to go around, but at least my husband can get in and out in his chair!

Forgive me, but I cannot read that.

“Second year in a row when fasting during HOLY MONTH that we will be climbing this mountain! This is slow poisoning!”
Blackburn is 30% Muslim and, just based on what I have seen of the people in this building, a lot more than 30% of them are Muslim. I don’t normally give a shit about religion in general, but these people feel like it’s their duty to fast and this really is something that could be done to help them. Especially since I see parents carrying prams up the stairs.

Ah, that makes more sense than “farting during holy month”
vk6flab@lemmy.radio 1 month ago
Thanks for the transcript.
In Australia there would be a legal requirement to have this fixed within a specified time. I wonder if there is a place to report this, since I suspect it likely contravenes several codes.

You mean, you cannot read cursive? I’m not even english native speaker and can read this easily, interesting
HikingVet@lemmy.ca 1 month ago
I’m an English speaker (mother tounge), I can read cursive. That is atrocious hand writing. I say this as a person with terrible hand writing.
Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 1 month ago
I am an even older fart, and I TAUGHT cursive. The only “cursive” here is the angry scrawl of someone who’d prefer to be cursing.
Look, for example, at the word immediately after HOLY MONTH. The closest correct cursive letters to fit the scrawl are:
“itreit”.
It’s only by context, and allowing for the angry misplacement of the tittle, that we can read it as “that.”
eager_eagle@lemmy.world 1 month ago
I can read it when the other person can write it

I can read cursive just fine. I can’t make out this note.
drrodneymckay_@sh.itjust.works 1 month ago
Many people can not, it’s not taught like it used to be. This however is a mix of sloppy cursive and simply not lifting the pen. Also the case of some letters are shifted. While I read the message correctly, it didn’t have context until reading other comments and I wasn’t sure I had it correct .

This isn’t cursive so much as it’s dragged manuscript. Keep in mind there’s no single group of characters in cursive. There’s variations. Capital F is the whole reason I quit cursive. Some do a backwards print F, some do it like the Friendly’s restaraunt chain.
Regardless, here’s what I couldn’t read accurately that buried the message: fasting, that, climbing, mountain.
0ops@lemm.ee 1 month ago
…that’s not cursive? Like, there’s 3 or 4 actual cursive letters in there, the rest is sloppy print
