I went to a Regal Cinema for the first time a few months ago and they played 20 minutes of ads that began at the advertised movie start times. Insane.

It’s been that way forever, I remember looking at my watch and thinking about it in the 90s
TachyonTele@lemm.ee 5 weeks ago
Was that the first time you’ve ever been to the movies? It’s been like that for decades.
gmgmgm@lemmy.world 5 weeks ago
Last time I went it was in black and white and accompanied by an orchestra
SkyezOpen@lemmy.world 5 weeks ago
It’s always been that way. Previews interspersed with coke ads.

I went to my local theater expecting this and ended up missing the first ten minutes of Venom 3. I guess the moral of the story is… Shop local?

Win win.

I would just walk out
TachyonTele@lemm.ee 5 weeks ago
That’s stupid. Why would you go to the movies just to walk out before it even started?
can@sh.itjust.works 5 weeks ago
And that’s always been bs. But at least then I can get tmy seats online and show up “late”
ElCanut@jlai.lu 5 weeks ago
You just described Amazon Prime TV
Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 5 weeks ago
Imagine paying money to watch YouTube.
Resonosity@lemmy.world 5 weeks ago
Imagine not using NewPipe, which has no ads and can play music in the background while you use other apps simultaneously (Samsung only feature I’ve heard, but still)
Black616Angel@discuss.tchncs.de 5 weeks ago
I use vanced, but NewPipe is also great.
greencactus@lemmy.world 5 weeks ago
Or imagine installing uBlock and not seeing ads at all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
YouTube really promoted uBlock more than uBlock could even promote itself
Faresh@lemmy.ml 5 weeks ago
Don’t use ublock, use ublock origin
greencactus@lemmy.world 5 weeks ago
Thank you for the correction! I meant origin and forgot to write it :)

As another reply said already
Imagine cable tv! (in the US at least, and, it seems, Canada, too)
It is so absurd until you realize people already accepted that shit… wtf!!!

Yes, but this is german and in Germany most TV is free with ads or paid without ads.
Anivia@feddit.org 5 weeks ago
No, most TV I Germany is either paid and with ads (ARD, ZDF etc.) , or free and with even more ads (RTL, Pro7 etc.). Paid TV without ads (Sky) is only used by a small minority

Okay, it is possible to get them for free (except the ÖR which I forgot, because the fee is mandatory for each household) which is what I meant but yes, there are lots of ads, but american TV also has I would say as many ads.
