AND YOU DONT HAVE TO CLEAN THE FUCKING HOTEL FOR THEM!
Wanna eat extra wet chicken wings in your king sized bed? Fuck it. The bones? Just toss ‘em on the floor!
(Just to be clear, don’t do that)
Comment on I'm not changing the sheets, I don't care.

Air BnB has been straight up bad value for such a long time. Hotels have copeted on price and give much better deals… With 24 hour front desks, helpful staff, swimming pool, en suite bathroom, etc. I gave up Air BnB years ago and never looked back.

Or do do that, and leave the housekeeper a tip, it’ll still be less than the cleaning fee you get for leaving the airbnb spotless

I always have my wife’s dog with us and she barks a lot when left alone so we end up using them for that reason. We could use hotels, but I’m not an asshole and I don’t want some stranger having to hear that.

Just don’t leave your wife alone. Problem solved.

Do you think it’s too late to train the wife?

Never too late!

That’s a temporary fix that will certainly turn out worse in the end

When it was cheaper for nicer accommodations we used it all the time. In the last 5 years I would never consider it. Far more expensive than a nice hotel, and with worse amenities.

I can stay in a hotel and be more confident they aren’t spying on me 24/7 with cameras, than I would be in some stranger’s house.

For the last 5 or so years I’ve only used the P2P hospitality platforms if I’m looking for a specific amenity or if it’s a group. There’s an AirBnB I visit ~once per year that has a nice big hot tub right by a river. It’s a unique stay and something a hotel couldn’t really do, it’s also around the same price as a nice hotel room.
Having a kitchen is nice in theory but if it’s a short term stay it doesn’t matter that much.
The platforms stopped being a bargain at some point with the fees and cleaning and rules. I can get a hotel room for around the same price that includes a breakfast and as long as I don’t trash it they’re thrilled to get my business.

It was more worth it in the beginning. I’ve found its still worth it abroad, at least in Europe.
drmoose@lemmy.world 3 days ago
If you have kids Airbnb is still much better value though.
We recently did a road trip in central europe and hotels are crazy expensive and frankly terrible for families. You either pay 200 euros per night or get 2 rooms 100 euros each that are not even connected while Airbnb for 3-4 person family can still he done for 100 euros AND you have a little kitchen for prepping food for kids etc.
Airbnb for >2 people is still like 50% cheaper and straigh up better experience.
hessenjunge@discuss.tchncs.de 3 days ago
For me it’s the opposite, also in Europe, also >2 people. Airbnb may sometimes be a bit cheaper than the higher class accommodations with breakfast included - before you add the fees of course. I don’t really bother anymore TBH.

I guess it just varies highly by location. The baltic and the Nordic countries Airbnb is so much better but France and Germany actually has proper reasonable family hotels. My guess from my own anecdotal experience would be that denser countries and locations have better scaling for family hotels while smaller ones scale better with family apartments / condos. The competition here might actually be low key good for everyone.
hessenjunge@discuss.tchncs.de 3 days ago
I don’t know about the Nordics but for me Airbnb was way overpriced in Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands, Lichtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, etc. in the USA it was in Florida and California. In every country there were touristy spots, cities, and off the beaten track locations. Timeframe: about the last 10 years at least.
I only open Airbnb to show the crazy to utterly deranged prices and wonder who is paying more for less convenience and no service.
Impleader@lemmy.world 3 days ago
I only use them when I want to travel somewhere without any other accommodations to speak of or if I want to bring my bike with me. Otherwise, hotels are so much better.
CarrierLost@infosec.pub 3 days ago
Same. The only value for me is when I’m traveling with a group of friends/family and we all want to stay together. That’s the only added value to an Airbnb for me.

Place I used to work at would book AirBnBs for any overnight stays at places far away from home. It usually worked out better, since it was cheaper than getting an individual room at a hotel for each employee, especially when it was 4-5, since it was company policy that every employee is entitled to their own room (which was relevant for people who worked with family and sometimes stayed together). We did have a lot of issues with going places that would list X bedrooms when they really meant X beds. But for my personal life, I can’t typically justify an AirBnB.
