This is why I’ve always preferred the term GSRM: Gender, Sexual, and Romantic Minorities. It’s fully inclusive without ballooning out to an absurd size. I see no signs that it will see common use in the near future though.

Honestly? Thanks for the disclaimer. Was really unsure how to feel about it at first. However… I agree. Want representation for everyone but the acronym does seem to change pretty frequently yet always leaves someone out somehow. I’ve honestly given up trying to keep track and just call everyone who isn’t straight and cis part of the “Rainbow Spectrum” or the “Rainbow Coalition”. I personally live on the corner of Magenta and Pink.

Ironically I remember it being just GSM. I see where the R comes from though
CobblerScholar@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I’ve also heard this used as a pejorative but I really like the term, “alphabet mafia”
Stamets@startrek.website 1 year ago
I do like it because there is some reclaiming and also some jokes but know who else I’ve heard referred to as the Alphabet Mafia? The Law Enforcement agencies of the United States
Blamemeta@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Yeah, FBI/CIA/ATF/DEA and all the rest. Alphabet Mafia refers to the three letter agencies.
Triple_B@lemmy.zip 1 year ago
Yeah, good luck taking it from them. It’s already negative, so maybe just leave it to the government so I can properly criticize said agencies and leave LGBTQIA+ peeps alone.
Sabre363@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
Let’s call it the Rainbow Mafia then
Stamets@startrek.website 1 year ago
Love it. If you don’t pay us the protection money then we break into your house, rearrange your furniture, and paint your walls in colors that do not clash with typical decor.

Alphabet Mafia sounds like it could be a bit from Sesame Street where some wise guys teach you how to read.
Bloodwoodsrisen@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 year ago
I tend to use “The Alphabet Mafia” when referring to everyone under the LGBT+ acronym
iMastari@kbin.social 1 year ago
Honest question:
Is it bad that I would prefer to call them either Human, a person or by their name?IMO referring someone by their sexuality or their preferred gender is akin to calling someone by their skin color or ethnic origin. Eg. Referring to someone as "My friend" in comparison to calling them: "My Mexican friend" or "My Black friend" or "My LGBTQ+ friend".
Acinonyx@lemmy.sdf.org 1 year ago
if the ‘+’ includes every not mentioned gender/sexuality anyways, why can’t we just say ‘L+’?
surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 1 year ago
IT folks solved this ages ago.

The second I have to use regular expressions I'm turning straight.
Spaghetti_Hitchens@kbin.social 1 year ago
I think being fluent in regular expressions probably makes you involuntarily celebrate so orientation won't matter.
funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
wouldn’t that match STRAIGHT ? 🤔
SkyezOpen@lemmy.world 1 year ago
“The Gays™” generally gets the point across.
Stamets@startrek.website 1 year ago
Because then it doesn’t feel like equal representation for everyone. It feels like Lesbians are getting the most representation with everyone being an after thought. While lesbians are awesome, it does feel shitty for everyone else. That’s why so many additions have been made. It doesn’t feel representative of everyone or equal. Also why I throw the whole thing out and just call us all something else. No one gets specific representation but it goes back to the original meaning of the Pride flag. Every color in equal representation, showing the diversity of us all and how we all deserve to be seen and heard.
Katana314@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I get the criticism, but most countries are not in the term “The United Nations” either. It feels possible to make a grouped, organized label that supports minority sexuality groups and opposes bigotry.
Stamets@startrek.website 1 year ago
I mean… no country is in that term. That’s the point that I’m trying to make. If you have a name for a collection of individual groups then the collective name shouldn’t mention any one particular group.
MotoAsh@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Naw, we just need to come up with words for different types of people that all start with L. Then we’ll be covered.
Stamets@startrek.website 1 year ago
Lobsters.
Acinonyx@lemmy.sdf.org 1 year ago
true equality would either be just ‘+’, without any letters, or including every letter, which seems impossible.
or like you said, something completely else. I personally like [please don’t kill me] ‘alphabet people’. I understand that rightoids use this term as an insult so it isn’t usable, which is a shame, because apart from its negative connotation it has a few nice upsides:
-‘people’ is completely neutral towards everyone as well
octoperson@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
Wouldn’t be the first time a term of abuse got appropriated by its target group
captainlezbian@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Because L+ is the only streaming service I’d pay for
Seriously though the history of lgbt as an acronym comes down to the fact that it began with gay men and lesbians organizing separately and bi and trans people being part of those organizations, but bisexual and trans groups began differentiating and separately organizing while we all began realizing we needed to work together more in order to actually change things.
