Someone rewrote the first Harry Potter book (I’m not kidding) to be about Harry using magic to do essentially eugenics, Sam took it seriously.
From that fanfic, the Rationalist / Effective Altruism people believe that as more people exist in the future than in the present, making an AI singularity that would behave as a God is more important than, e.g. curing cancer, or providing clean drinking water.

I mean, according to them, they have transcended the need for physical bodies (presumably because they ate only raw fruit and shit themselves out of existence)

let me refer you to my good friend Valiant Thor (yes that’s his name) who is a real bona-fide Venusian alien who is definitely a great person to give you health advice.

I never like to let people forget the raw fruit diet comes from a cult that believes people from Venus told us that’s the key to eternal life

intelligence is a very hard thing to quantify. People who are good at math might be terrible at writing plays, both of which are intelligent processes.

The Jim Rose circus is a famous counter-culture performance. At the show I saw a woman put paint in her butt and farted it onto a canvas. There was also light bulb eating, further nudity, chainsaw juggling etc
In that context, it would be surprising to see them tweet about botany, making this kinda a joke tweet in itself that they would tweet this, which is why it has the commentary.

I remember a friend of mine becoming a mother and saying, “Yeah the doctor said never to let her head go back too far and a split second later my daughter suddenly decided to fucking wrench their neck as far back as it could go”

I’ve recently learned Americans don’t do log tables in high school.
Log is the opposite of exponent, so log2 is the opposite of squared, log 3 the opposite of cubed. log4 opposite of x^4 etc
instead of making things relatively bigger, you’re going the other way and making things smaller.

Freddie Mercury and Prince?
Their only controversy is that they liked sex and were bi to my mind, which as someone who that also applies to, I don’t see as immoral.

- Comment on Do you feel like you've reached the end of what the world has to offer? 5 weeks ago:
The question was do I feel like I’ve reached the end of what the world has to offer.
No, and as an example of what I find enriching: music, books, TV, film, dance, poetry, news, science, games - other people would count sports… even if you find between 51–99.9% of entertainment of any and all kinds unenriching and unentertaining, then you still find some things meet that, and thus have not reached the end of everything in the world.
My point being with such hyperbole: no, no one has reached the end
- Comment on Do you feel like you've reached the end of what the world has to offer? 5 weeks ago:
frequently, yes. You can’t convince me you’ve never been entertained and enriched by entertainment
- Comment on Do you feel like you've reached the end of what the world has to offer? 5 weeks ago:
I doubt I could even make a dent in the amount of art, music, theatre, film, TV, fiction, dance, and reading about scientific studies made only this year so far if I was trying to consume and experience everything.
Let alone everything from the last 200 years. So, no, even without leaving my house there’s enough new things to last a lifetime

- Comment on WHY 5 weeks ago:
I meant it colloquially - like a long time ago - but fair point. More accurately, it was introduced about 100-150 years before there was a linguistic trend for fruit to be called fruit and not apples.
- Comment on WHY 5 weeks ago:
to be fair, that’s a modern take. in antiquity it was so ignoble it was given the generic name for a fruit/vegetable.
a modern version might be more akin to “dirt thing”
