- Comment on What are some good communities to follow for someone who is just getting into lemmy? 4 days ago:
What are his interests? I can make a few suggestions based on them. There is a search bar where he can filter for communities containing keywords he looks for. I also suggest browsing by All, subscribing to communities that interest him, and blocking the communities and users (sometimes it’s a handful of users sharing unwanted content around multiple communities) he doesn’t want to see.

Context:
Tsujigiri (辻斬り or 辻斬, literally “crossroads killing") is a Japanese term for a practice when a samurai, after receiving a new katana or developing a new fighting style or weapon, tests its effectiveness by attacking a human opponent, usually a random defenseless passer-by, in many cases during night time. The practitioners themselves are also referred to as tsujigiri.
The act of tsujigiri against defenceless civilians was widely and socially condemned as immoral, cowardly, and associated with rogue samurais and bandits, and was not considered common or respectable samurai practice. It was made a capital offence by law in 1602 by the Edo government.

Slight tangent: maybe this is just an online thing since I hardly ever hear it in real life, but I do not understand the mean comments towards short men (especially from women who are still shorter than them). You get all the benefits of man™ in compact form. What’s not to like??

The Feast of the Ass has been around since the 11th century and somewhere along the line, things were lost in translation.
- Comment on Why do russian parents insist on being treated to home cooked meals? 1 month ago:
It is custom in some cultures, including mine, to host holidays and personal events in your own home and visit friends and family in their homes when it is their turn. There may not be (or have been at the time) a good selection of restaurants, those restaurants might be expensive or exclusive, and inviting someone for a home cooked meal feels like the more personal and thoughtful thing to do. Some older generations have a hard time letting go of these customs without understanding that circumstances have changed (less family and community support, more options for eating out).
It can be exhausting having to regularly host and clean before and after large groups of people on top of all your other responsibilities and I can’t blame anyone for wanting to celebrate in a restaurant or somewhere outside the home.
