As someone who has shaved their head and not paid a barber for 20 years, not a penny.
If someone could make a hair trimmer that could 3d scan your head well enough to give you a taper on the edges, how much would you pay?

Another one that wants to scan my face… You couldn’t pay me to scan my face. You would have to force it like governments do. Go to a barber shop
TheReanuKeeves@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Not your face, just where your hair is. I think for all intents and purposes you could wear a full facemask as long as it doesn’t obstruct your hairline for this

just where your hair is
You wanna scan my nethers then? 👀

I started cutting my own hair decades ago, and tapering is probably the first and easiest thing I learned. Blending different lengths on longer hair is much more of a challenge IME. That and specialised styles I guess, which I never really bothered with.

a what
deadbeef79000@lemmy.nz 3 weeks ago
TBF I’d rather pay a person to do it.
TheReanuKeeves@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
For ethical reasons?
deadbeef79000@lemmy.nz 2 weeks ago
Basically, yeah. IMHO a hair style is art, is rather that stays in human hands.
If this machine was shearing sheep… then we’re onto something.

Also, I’m confident a person isn’t going to randomly go psychotic and remove an ear.

Doesn’t line the back up though
GreenBeard@lemmy.ca 3 weeks ago
… You know a haircut costs 1.5 cheeseburgers (ish) right? I’ll take a human who isn’t going to hallucinate and randomly remove my face thanks.
TheReanuKeeves@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
It’s not AI, it’s 3d scanning that has been done since the 60s

If it did a good reliable job, 200€-400€ I’d rather just go to the bathroom, put something on, and wait for a short while, and then have a good haircut. Going to a barber and planning etc is a lot more work
TheReanuKeeves@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Rightt??? It’s not about skipping the human interaction for me, it’s just so much more convenient. Could throw on this helmet while brushing my teeth and get a fresh trim every morning.
ComradePenguin@lemmy.ml 2 weeks ago
For me its about skipping mostly transactional human interactions. Like most efficiency gains for me, I get more time with those I want to spend time with, and hobbies.
It is important to note that I am not a typical person in this regard, I spend a lot of time and effort to remove friction (save time) day to day.

I’m probably just going to go back to shaving my head. I have no trouble growing hair, but can’t really be bothered. My wife doesn’t care either way which is probably the thing I most care about
bizzle@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
I’m bald on top anyway I’m just going to keep shaving for free
Mercer@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago
If no face scanning, and it was quick/convenient maybe £5 otherwise I’ll stick to humans
TheReanuKeeves@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Do you mean £5 per cut or £5 for the machine? Because I mean if it were a product available at a store and could get a quick decent buzz whenever you want
trxxruraxvr@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Nothing
glitchdx@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Zero dollars.
Now if it could give me a perfect shave around my downstairs bits, then I’d be willing to shell out $200 or $300.

I never really bothered with tapers, and I prefer this kind of thing to be simple, reliable, longlasting and offline, which is diametrically opposed to the kind of tech you’re describing.
TheReanuKeeves@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
It’s relatively simple compared to a Tesla Roadster, I would build in safety features like those table saws that stop when they hit fleshy bits, it can be long lasting if people are willing to pay enough to support those raw materials and r&d, I don’t think it needs to be online
rumschlumpel@feddit.org 2 weeks ago
In contrast to hair trimmers, cars have an extensive repair infrastructure, and the labor is relatively cheap compared to the buying price, which would not be true for a handheld device.
turdburglar@piefed.social 2 weeks ago
this line of thinking, while interesting, makes me doubt that you’ve ever cut hair or used a sawstop.
