you know what's mildly infuriating? a reposter bot

It’s kinda annoying opening the community and seeing posts made only by a single ~~person~~ bot that posts so much that actually genuine content get suffucated, i think we all know who i talk about (if not, it’s Sanitation), they don’t even link the original post (which i know it’s not obbligatory but cmon…!) I cam block them though so it’s only mildly infuriating, though, it makes genuine posters have less comments (and so discussion)
Please, if you are a mod and read this, i ask to take action if you are not a mod, please feel free to discuss about that with me and everyone else

I’ve been conflicted about Sanitation for a while.

On one hand, it’s more content. I open Lemmy, and I see a dozen articles that wouldn’t be there otherwise. Sometimes they interest me, and I read them. In that case, I suppose I should appreciate that it was shared at all

But on the other hand, all those posts rarely turn into conversations. Sanitation isn’t hanging around to talk about what they found, they’re already looking for the next batch of posts to steal. I’ve put a tag on them, so even if I do end up reading one of their posts, I avoid commenting. At worst, I’m talking to a robot, or at best, I’m just yelling into the void.

  They just posted an AI slop image of cats in a PC tower masquerading as a personal post of something that really happened. That was enough to convince me to block.

At first I read this and was like, “Wait, who?” I went back to the main page and tried seeing any posts by that name. I tried every sort-type and didn’t see it. So I looked up the name directly.

Found the profile. In the corner, I saw the button: “Unblock user.”

Ha! No wonder I didn’t recognize the name. - turns out I already blocked them some time ago! I rarely block anybody, their posts must have overwhelmingly been utter garbage to make onto that short list.

    I think people that say lemmy is full of content are kind of losing their story if username of an active user is that recognizable. I think lemmy is starved for content and it shows, thare are just no or very little contributors.

For me it’s the apparent vote manipulation that is really pissing me off. At 40-50 posts a day it seems like they are a bot but they could also just have no life whatsoever or a really really boring job (or both).

But I keep seeing them hit the front page over and over with posts that have 40-50 upvotes in an hour and 0 comments. I just don’t see how that’s possible unless they are bot votes.

  Usually my posts take at least 2 hours to get more than 30 upvotes so i guess, but also it seems that this community has a lil more users reacting

    Sure but this post also has 9 separate comment threads in 4 hours in addition to 70+ upvotes from what I can see. I’m not saying that every post is going to look the same but typically a highly upvoted post will have several comments. Given the typical ratio of comments to votes it seems like a weird pattern to me.

Yeah that’s what the block button is for. Blocking is a great method for content curation.

Reddit had a ton of accounts like this, and I loved blocking every one of them. That clearly wasn’t the majority opinion, though.

I think that mods should only take action if it’s too difficult to moderate or the posts are doing consistently poorly. Not a mod, though, so what do I know?

  Unfortunately the fact that you need 400 billion fucking things blocked to make this place less annoying… means that it is annoying. Bot accounts and communities that already exist fifty thousand other fucking places with no activity are way too trivial to spin up

    I feel like that would need to be .* but im kinda wondering if you need to do something for the at but I can’t for the life of me think if at is used for anything. you could do the keyword block thing but im worried about using that to much. I have not seen an alt of his in awhile so im guessing I have them all blocked at this point but man has to be more than a dozen. When I go through my block list I have to scroll for a bit to get passed his.

    cm0002 was awhile back from my perspective but I have blocked many many of his alts. It was a guy with a thing in his craw for “tankies” and he felt the best way to express it was to make posts in .world that were copies of ones from .ml in order to suppress .ml I guess. I would not have realized but I was posting devils panties to a .ml comics thing and he was doing it and it kinda was annoying me as in my own feed I would see his over mine because I read by most recent. Basically within an hour he would repost. I thought he was a bot but talked with him. Here is the think I was like. Well if you will post devils panties every day I can just stop and just see it in your posts. he was like no. so basically he would only do it for his repost mission but would not make a point of doing it himself to add content to the fediverse. it was kinda funny because I started posting in various other ways and got it to the point where I would post just text saying hey todays devils panties was real fun because or whatnot. He would post with the url and everything even though that was not in my post. so he would do all the work if I posted. If I did not post anything though then he would not post. At that point it was. Wow. This guy just has mental problems.

Linking to Reddit is against community rules, bot aren’t.

Idk, I think it isn’t actually automated and he is picking the content he reposts. I don’t really see a harm to it when Lemmy is sometimes starving for content.

  He makes 1,078 posts per month (according to the “activity” stat) which means it’s roughly 30 posts per day, there is no way a human makes 30 posts per day without automations of some sort

    Other than the most recent one where he’s responding to someone in all caps, I don’t see it. The all caps response comes off as someone tired of all the complaining, not necessarily unhinged.

Social media as a whole has been abysmal about allowing content to be cited, linked, or tracked back to original sources. I consider it a fundamental flaw to solve. Imgur was one attempt but big tech was way too greedy and every site wanted to host (read: own) anything that gets posted. This could be one of the genuinely useful problems for AI to help tackle.
