You could just move the immovable sidebar to the bottom or to the right. Or you could enable auto hide.

No he can’t, didn’t you hear him? It’s UNMOVABLE!!
DasRundeEtwas@feddit.de 11 months ago
He did say that yes.
But this looks a lot like the gnome sidebar. Most likely in a Ubuntu install. In wich case the sidebar is very much movable.

This made me laugh so hard

I’ve never done this orientation, but can’t you just pull the app window by clicking the top app bar? You just pull it away then move it back to the top of the screen to activate the auto window sizing/dock thingie and then it’ll just resize to the space? Might not work and it should’ve corrected when OP changed to this setting in the first place, but there’s always manual resizing of the application window too (though obviously annoying).

You know what the problem with this post is? The picture isn’t tall enough.
realitista@lemm.ee 11 months ago
… when the mildly infuriating thing is OP’s ignorance

Dude that’s most off that posts here. This place is significantly worse than the subreddit it’s based on

Can’t beleieve I had to scroll through that.
JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee 11 months ago
Can’t you set it to auto hide?
Lime66@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Where would I find that setting?
NegativeInf@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Click the Show more applications option Click Settings Search for Appearances Select the Dock option Select Position on screen from the drop-down menu Select Bottom You can also right click on any free space on the taskbar, click and hold on Drag to move, and pull the taskbar to the top.

Christ, man, just go back to Windows.
BananaTrifleViolin@kbin.social 11 months ago
It's not immovable, it's just locked so you don't accidentally move it by clicking and dragging. Try right locking on the bar in a blank area lower down - the right click menu should have an option for moving it.

Excuse me, we're gonna need you to add more snark to your comment. All you did was offer helpful advice as to how OP can fix their problem.

Can’t you configure it so that windows can’t go under or over the immovable sidebar
vaionko@sopuli.xyz 11 months ago
Yes, and you can also move tle immovable sidebar
ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social 11 months ago
I'm pretty sure this is on Ubuntu where the sidebar is on the left side by default.

If you are using Gnome just use Gnome tweaks and install “Dash to dock” extension(it has auto hide feature). There are many usefull extensions in the Gnome extensions site.

If you’re used to Windows, try something like Linux Mint with Cinnamon. If MacOS was your system before, then maybe something with KDE would be best. Otherwise, just change the desktop environment on your current installation or configure Gnome to your liking.
Lime66@lemmy.world 11 months ago
I use both regularly, I think macos acts a bit more like GNOME than KDE though. I definitely prefer gnome
therafal@lemmy.world 11 months ago
I haven’t use either for quite a while, tho, I always prefered KDE. Plasma has a lot of features that are also present on MacOS, tho, I never used Apple’s products, so my knowledge is limited to the videos of them.

I am thinking, from when it is easier to cry on Lemmy/Reddit then just spent 5 minutes of your life googling and finding solution. Like bro, i was able to solve this as 15 years old kid, when i first met GNOME :) just try sometimes thinking first, then crying ;)
