12000 bees sounds like a lot, but a normal hive can have around 50000 bees in the summer. One time I loaded 3 hives into the backseat of my car because they needed to be transported, and as I was driving I thought what if I hit a pothole or something and they all tip over, I’ll have like 150k bees in the car with me.

Most Bees are chill. Some, especially if they’re guarding their hive/nest, can be aggressive to anyone getting too close.
I’ve been stung half a dozen times just by minding my own business riding a bike, and a couple of bees thought I was attacking them by driving by.

Were you perhaps eating a banana? Apparently to some bees bananas give off smells that are quite similar to disstress or ‘defend/fight’ pheromones
