Is there something wrong with the Nova Launcher that I should know about?

        Joining that immediately

TL;DR: Sold off, dev team was (figuratively) slaughtered, OG dev is pretty much out of the picture, new owner is planning on injecting ads into the launcher and we basically know nothing else about the future of it. I.e they’re turning it into a cash grab.

also Nova Launcher rolls out stability fixes, confirms $4.99 annual subscription for new users

That’s the whole reason I downloaded it was to get away from cash grab companies! Well I’m glad I found out, I’ll try Lawnchair now.

Is it ads for paid users as well?

I’d like to buy a Fairphone, but the missing IP68 rating is concerning to me. I really don’t want to have to worry about my phone dying if I get into a rainstorm for example, especially while traveling.

So I have a story for you. I own a fairphone 3+ for a little more than 5 years now.

Recently, while doing the dishes, my phone accidentally slipped in the sink. I protected it with a phone case and a screen protection, but still, panic ensued.

I removed the battery as fast as possible, dried it up as best as I could, restarted it, and it worked just fine.

Well, most of it at least. The jack port took some damage but ended up fixing itself (???) and the usb- charge port refused to charge the phone unless it was tilted a specific way.

Doesn’t matter, I ordered a new usb-c module for less than 30€, and replaced it (i’m not really good hardware-wise, but fortunately, it was pretty easy). Now it works like a charm.

I feel like an event like this would have been a death sentence for most other phones, and even if it wasn’t, my clumsy ass keeps dropping my phone, so it might have been even sooner.

So far, this phone just refuses to die. It might be slightly outdated and buggy at times (apparently it got better in the last iterations), but it is still very much usable with no critical failure yet.

It really shouldn’t be hard to make. Im typing this on one and there really is just the back with screws which could be tricky, but a replaceable gasket should do the trick even if it isn’t going to survive a few meters of water.

That’s a fair and practical perspective. Longevity, repairability, and not having to replace a device every couple of years are reasons a lot of people can relate to. Sometimes sustainability starts with simply using things longer.

Been using Octopi Launcher, and it’s a decently solid replacement for Nova. I actually think it’s more flexible as you have customization tucked behind the single long press on your home screen. With Nova I always had to figure out the best way to swipe up from the bottom and more than half the time end up opening the app drawer.

Do you find there to be a split second of delay when you switch to it before it’ll respond to pressing things? Unsure if I’m going mad, or holding it wrong, or something.

Honestly I’ve not noticed. Granted, I have a 5 year old sub-flagship Samsung (A70), so there’s a little sluggishness all around.

There’s tons of search focused ones, which is weird to me. If you want a normal layout with folders then I suggest you go with Lawnchair.

    source
  • lechekaflan@lemmy.world ⁨2⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

    Lawnchair.

The free version of post-acquision Nova will be, of course, enshittified with popup ads. Therefore, it’s still possible to roll back to a much older version (aka last year’s) and – through the Play Store – prevent that app from being auto-updated.

I just tried total launcher. Love most of it, but still trying to figure out things like multiple docks, etc.

I’m on the same train. I recently replaced Nova with Total Launcher and still trying to figure out how to do stuff with it. My home screen is evolving day by day, but generally it has a steep learning curve. Do you maybe know of any good online resources for Total Launcher apart from the official blogspot?

Pear Launcher is nice. Fossify Home is good, too. I prefer Pear since it lets you use icon themes.

Yeah every battery in my 4 lasted a winter before having to be replaced. Not sure that’s all that environmentally friendly.

My battery (on fp2) lasted some 8 yrs before giving up, are your winter especially harsh ?

Just discovered graphene runs on my two year old Motorola. Very cool that they support multiple manufacturers.

Hold up, Motorola was never supported according to them?

So, I use Nova on my Galaxy Note 9. Nova asked me to allow ads. I just kept closing the message until it stopped popping up.

I don’t see ads anywhere on my phone.

Where are the ads supposed to be? Or is the concern more data harvesting than actually displaying ads?

    source
    • Grail@multiverse.soulism.net ⁨2⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

The ads appeared at the top of the drawer for Me yesterday

Ewww I just saw one, yeah. Thanks for answering too. I literally never use that feature though so I can probably just ignore them if that’s the only place they are.

Checkout [Yantra]github.com/coderGtm/yantra-app-launcher) it’s a minimal launcher that mimic a command line, distraction free but still has a lot of features and is open source!

I just switched to Dragon-Launcher and like it a lot. Gestures are great to use and the devs are super responsive.
