“I Guess”
I keep seeing the initials "ig" in comments. They clearly don't mean "Instagram". What does "ig" mean then?

I don’t know why people can’t just write the full words, it’s not like it takes any time to write “I guess”.

Y use lot word when short word do trick.
I get over abbreviation is annoying but this isn’t that bad

Still takes a moment to understand what they mean, and leads to confusion like the poster experienced. Doesn’t cost anything to write the full words! Maybe I’m just getting old!

What are the odds that most of the users of these obscure abbreviations have never read a book?

why can’t people just type the whole letters it’s going to be read by like 10,000 people for 40 years potentially you can’t just type all the goddamn letters

To answer your second comment: To link a comment, either copy the link icon or the fediverse icon.

I tried the link icon, and it got us what we see in the post. I’ll try the Fediverse icon next time. Thank you!

saving SMS credit for a decade
At least two decades! I’d say this trend goes back to the late 90s – think chatspeak on AOL chatrooms, ICQ, etc. I didn’t get my first mobile 'til '02, but SMS was invented in '92. People were probably doing this as soon as SMS was available on their phones.
