The idea of 3D printed resurrection machines isn’t new. It’s pretty much the whole basis of the Undying Mercenaries series by B.V. Larson

The cloning in space narrative was also covered by Moon (2009).
wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 weeks ago
That’s a bit of a spoiler, isn’t it?
phx@lemmy.ca 5 weeks ago
Haven’t seen it. Good?
I should add it to my list

Yeah, but the concept also has a LOT of space to play in but most writers play it safe. Way too many just treat is as a handwavy checkpoint system and move on with the plot they care about.
Soma (video game, not a book) was a really horrifying dive into being able to save and upload a consciousness. Not a lot of stories try to dive into how do you know if a “copy” of you is truly a copy. It’s like a Turing test on steroids trying to figure this out. Being able to practically test just how different someone can be from a single different event.
It’s one of the things I really enjoyed about the Bobiverse series (although apparently later on they added the idea of a soul, which just kinda seems like a cop out to me)
lepinkainen@lemmy.world 4 weeks ago
Not really a soul, more like an explanation why the bob clones are different and why they can’t just make 1:1 clones of an each other - even when their consciousness moves from one place to another.
They just called it a “soul” in lack of a better name.

Oh man I cannot wait for the new one next month!

Really fun series too lol

Yeah. The MC is a jackass but he does learn a bit over the series and there’s some depth to the thoughts on how little would react to being able to come back from dying repeatedly (and the first “training scenario”) under most scenarios.

Just saw the trailer, I like the tone, hope it’s good.
I’m still mad at snow piercer… why the fuck do they need to constantly moving? That’s the worse thing for heat insolation!
bufalo1973@lemm.ee 4 weeks ago
Snow Piercer is not about a train. It’s about capitalism, communism, revolutions and anarchism. The train is the capitalist world and the final message is anarchist.
straightjorkin@lemmy.world 4 weeks ago
Yeah, complaining about the science of Snowpiercer is kind of like complaining that the animals in Animal Farm talk
Aux@feddit.uk 4 weeks ago
It depends on which Snowpiercer you’re watching. The movie is about the revolution. The series is about lazy people fucking up the working system.
Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 4 weeks ago
Okay sure but can’t you have all of that without train?
Imo a bunker would be a much better metaphor, especially since Ed Harris’ character believed their world was eternal (it was hard to believe it was running for that long).
I like the director and his critique on capitalism but imo he did it wrong. Especially give that the ending
Tap for spoiler
Was the self destruction of humanity, given the train crashed, not anarchy. Imo the movie would have been semi saved if they just showed a tribe of Eskimos at the end, not a polar bear. That would be perfect, it would show that humanity would live on, but clearly the capitalistic system that was preserved on a train was self destructive and always meant to crash.

It’s not exactly hard scifi
Ptsf@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I enjoyed it personally. Felt very easy to watch and the cinematography was fun.

I watched this today and really enjoyed it.
I’m not going to pretend it’s the greatest or deepest sci-fi film ever made, but it’s fun if you are into dystopian; it’s almost Gilliam esc. but it doesn’t quite embrace it fully.
The Messianic cult leader is a little on the nose and as 2D as his realife inspiration is.
It doesn’t explore all the possibilities or offer real depth to what is a complex topic, but as a soft sci-fi story it’s a fun and sometimes funny way to pass a couple of hours.

I am going to go watch it this coming Thursday (first day when it’s available in English in my country).
tankplanker@lemmy.world 4 weeks ago
Hope you enjoy it!

Gilliam esc
Gilliam-esque? Gibson-esque?
tankplanker@lemmy.world 4 weeks ago
Gilliam-esque, the scientists in particular are very Brazil/12 monkeys like
RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 5 weeks ago
Hmmm, interesting! I’ve seen a lot of ads for it but was unsure. Maybe something to watch when/if or comes to home watching?

I just went over to metacritic to see how the film is being reviewed, and BOY are the chuds mad. I saw a literal Nazi username saying the movie sucks blah blah blah. Went to report it but you need an account for that. Makes me want to see it in theatres even more now
