It was a complicated time when life switched to oxygen. We still have life without oxygen btw (mostly in the depths). But those damn plants fucked up a good life for everyone back then.
Comment on hyperbaric oxygen chamber

Our bodies have multiple enzymes and antioxidants to keep oxygen from slowly killing us. And this guy wants to concentrate it. Hyperbaric has its uses, making a normal person live longer is not one of them.

Plenty of anaerobic bacteria topside! Go take a dump. That smell is mostly their waste products.
Fun fact: Poop is mostly bacteria. Had a gut surgeon tell me it was 90%.
AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 1 week ago
90% sounds about right. We’re two legged supports for our bacteria. Without us it would take them ages to go places. That’s why we shit at least once a day. Toilets are our bacteria’s malediction.

Animals are pooping inside of me?!

Go take a dump.
Don’t threaten me with a good time.

fire hazard too.

Listened to a tale of a kid with adhd thrown into one of these and the moron doctors didn’t follow proper safety. Apparently it’s not just a fire, it’s like a goddamn plasma burn. No way on hell do you survive. Better to let a person burn quickly rather than attempt rescue.

yup. flame in a pure oxygen env (or even just a high %) spreads insanely quickly and can even burn the lungs.

I remember seeing a meme about what alien life might be like and they say “what do you mean all life on Earth breathes rocket fuel???”

The dominant species exposed itself to damaging stellar radiation as a form of recreation.

I get these stories as a way of pointing out the inherant absurditity in a lot of every day things…
…but also… life requires energy. Something’s gotta keep the metabolism going. Oxygen is both highly reactive and significantly more abundant than any of its heavier counterparts further down the column. If there is life out there with a metabolic rate anywhere approaching our own, it would be weird if it didn’t use oxygen.

The great filter turned out to be an atmosphere fire. We’re lucky we got nitrogen.
